“Friendly service, a well located, rustic hotel with some charm but a bit dated”

We have just come back from a stay at this hotel and whilst the service and welcome were friendly and the rooms & hotel very clean and not without some charm, the issues mentioned in other reviews were confirmed.

The pluses are the location, if you have a car it is easy to get to & from Malaga (under one hour) and well placed to access Nerja, Frigiliana, La Herradura et al. The rooms are clean and functional, the service friendly and the one dinner we had (New Year banquet) was excellent.

The negatives - There is a TV in the room - I didn't measure the screen size but it was miniscule and of the type popular in hotels in the last century. Thankfully we have holidays to catch up on reading but if you want to watch your favourite programme, bring binoculars. An investment in some LCD TVs would be a great idea especially as this is not a huge hotel in terms of room numbers or they should just be removed (which at least would mean that you won't be kept awake by the blue monitor light which stays on all night..)

Why have a sign on your breakfast table telling diners it is "forbidden to take food out of the dining room" (especially when the breakfast is essentially comprised of the usual tasteless ham, cheese and plastic wrapped pastries). The honest diner will be irritated but the determined fruit and cereal thief surely won't be put off?

When your outside pool has been drained, why attempt to charge 15 euros per person per hour for your indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi.? The result is no one uses these amenities and everyone feels cheated having read the list of amenities and assuming they are inclusive.

Why also attempt to charge guests for chilling their drinks in your fridge?

All of the above just seems like pointless mean spiritidness, in what must be a very competitive market? You would think that the aim was to delight your customers so much that they want to come back and would recommend your hotel to their friends. These policies seem to be designed to achieve the opposite for what is essentially a decent hotel.

Its also time to repaint or do a new sign by the road - the current one is old and faded - so what does that say about the Hotel?

“What was really really good about this hotel was its restaurant ... nom noms”

We stayed here one night with my boyfriends parents on our drive between Granada and Arcos.

The hotel rooms are ok slightly dated but clean and comfy with a tv, aircon and a fridge.
Each of our rooms had a balcony with table a couple of chairs and a nice view our to the sea.

Breakfast came with the room and was nice enough cereals, bread, cheese, salami, pastries, yogurt, fruit, coffee etc.

What was really really good about this hotel was its restaurant which has sea views if you sit on the balcony. The food and wine was so tasty. I had cod stuffed peppers in a white sauce made with Spanish cheese, chardonnay, honey. Another dish was a pork stew which sounded average on the menu to me but when I stole a taste was soooo good. Bit pricey but worth every penny.

Note you need a car for this hotel as its a few mins drive from the Nerja town, they have free parking.

Nerja is a very pretty town on the coast and still very Spanish (Not full of British tourists like Marbella etc).

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2009

Sadly this hotel did not live up to the reviews on your site prior to booking. Car hire is essential unless you are prepared to walk 3km one way and 7km the other on busy main roads and over roundabouts with no paths. The sea views are spoiled by the motorways. The staff apart from the maid and one waiter were very brusque and unhelpful. There were notices asking guests not to steal from breakfast, food /drink was not allowed to be brought in for consumption etc. This meant that (without a car) you had to access all meals from the hotel, which after 3 days and the same menu was very boring. The room was clean but basic. The indoor pool was charged by the hour, and there was also a charge to order a taxi. We were most annoyed when on day 3 a note was pushed under our door asking for payment for using the minibar to chill some bottled water -after all there is no poolside bar or ice-cream facility, which we would have been happy to pay for. We actually considered checking out at this point - we have stayed in many hotels in many countries and have never been asked to pay to chill water. The outdoor pool was a redeeming feature in spite of some traffic noise. Fortunately we had a car, and after that we used it together with the local bus service and taxis (if you want a drink) and skipped breakfast. We felt less like inmates after that and went on to a fabulous few days in Malaga at a grown-up hotel.

“Rural hotel almazara”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2009

Needed a week away with some guaranteed sunshine, we feared Egypt may be too risky as the hotel reviews on here were all really ropey so we plunged for a week at the Almazara, booked through teletext.co.uk. Trip came to about £250pp for the week, flights with easyjet to Malaga from Gatwick. We hired a car which we collected from the airport then drove straight to the Hotel via 3 wrong turns. It's a 45 minute journey.

Upon arrival we knew we'd picked the right place, the staff were delightfully friendly and plied us with info about the local villages and resorts. The room was fine, a bit spartan perhaps but i'd say it was a solid 2 star rural hotel room, nothing like a parador but better than a hostel. Room was about 5m x 2.5m, bathroom about 2x2, had shower, bidet and sink with some nice marble and a big mirror. Water pressure really good and hot water throughout the day and night. Beds were a bit funny, more like camp beds but not too soft. Not attached to the headboards though, as we heard throughout the night as the people next door got to know each other a little better. When morning came the balcony was like having an extra room, stunning views across the mountains and down towards the sea. It's a great location but one would be well advised to hire a vehicle from the airport as the two nearest towns are over 4km away. Nerja, just down the hill towards the sea, is a mixture of expats, locals and holidaymakers. Tourists mainly Dutch/German/N Irish, no hooligans or lager louts. 2 good supermarkets there, Mercadona and Supersol. Frigiliana is 4-5km up the hill, it's a really picturesque small hilltown, views are amazing, we had coffee or lunch there every day.

Back to the hotel - breakfast was fine, standard 'continental' style. One major drawback was that the chef was on holiday from early jan to late feb. We had looked forward to eating in the restaurant after reading other reviews but it wasn't to be. We had intended to use the spa too, but it's E15 per person for one hour. The staff were happy to serve us drinks in the lounge area, was about E1.70 for a glass of wine prob the same for a half of beer. The chap with the beard was the star of the show, think he may have been called Pepe, he recommended 4-5 tapas bars in Nerja where we spent most of our money in the evenings and were made to feel liek regulars. The hotel is really easy to find, it's the first right turn on the road to Frigiliana, look for the word 'HOTEL' painted onto a big white building. If you're thinking of staying here I would wholeheartedly recommend it, the main drawbacks for us were the restaurant being closed and the thin walls between the rooms. Otherwise it's a great place to stay with really friendly staff, we had a super week and were gutted to leave!

“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2008

Having returned only yesterday from a wonderful 10 day stay at the Hotel Rural Almazara, I'm already missing this wonderful hotel and it's beautiful surroundings.

The hotel is ideally situated (very centrally) for travelling around the region of Nerja and Frigiliana, and further afield (we went to Puerto Banus in Marbella, Gibraltar, and Granada).

The hotel is of the highest standard in the most beautiful rustic Andalusian Style of decor, simple but very tasteful, and absolutely spotless.

The food was wonderful (we chose the bed and breakfast option but ate at the hotel five nights out of the nine nights we were there) and the staff were friendly, helpful, courteous and unintrusive at all times.

My only tip would be to hire a car, as the hotel really is in the middle of no-where - sheer bliss!! We wanted both a relaxing holiday but wanted to see some of the surrounding area and would have struggled touring the areas we wanted to visit on buses, although there is a regular bus route through to Nerja and Frigiliana.

I can't recommend this hotel highly enough. It was fabulous. If you stay at this hotel I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.
