“Enjoyable -- and healthy with it.”

We've just had a wonderful week at the Terme di Augusto. We had been expecting something less than perfect after reading one of the earlier reviews posted here, but were very pleasantly surprised by what we found so wanted to put the record straight.
The hotel itself has excellent facilities; three pools, all warm, including one that's thermal. It was a real pleasure to be able to lie in the luxury of a thermal pool and feel the water doing you good.
The staff were helpful and efficient and most spoke English and tolerated with benign amusement my halting efforts at speaking Italian.
The breakfasts were more than adequate, with plenty of cereals, fruit juices, delicious yogurt, breads, croissants, cheese and cold meat. The only thing we missed was fresh fruit. The evening meals were good, with a very fine selection of mixed grilled vegetables for hors d'oeuvres every evening followed by a choice of starters and a choice of main meals and puddings. The service was always courteous and efficient.
Lacco Ameno is a charming place and the hotel is placed right at the heart of it. If the hotel was as poor as that previous review claimed then it has changed beyond all recognition. We had an excellent week there, and not just because the weather was perfect.

“A great week in Ischia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2004

The hotel is wonderfully located, close to the main street but quiet, and is beautifully furnished. It is extremely comfortable and is packed with amenities (thermal spas and pool, lounge, rooftop pool, ground floor pool, evening dancing room). The food is good (not gourmet but good) and there is a good choice. The service is impeccable, although the spa staff could use a bit more training in customer care and English!
We will certainly go there again - and we've never said that about a European hotel before! Lacco Ameno, the town, is great - lovely relaxed atmosphere, not commercialised (yet) but with plenty of shop windows to browse past.
A great hotel in a great place!

“Grand Hotel Terme di Augusto...beautiful but limited services”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2003

Grand Hotel Terme di Augusto is a very beautiful hotel, but with disappointing amenities and services. My husband and I were there the end of September to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and were looking forward to being pampered in their Spa. No one spoke english in the spa, there was no english explanation of services, and my one massage was done while hotel construction with hammering and electric saw seemed right above my head. The hotel had also disconnected the air conditioning service even though it was still very hot, and particularly stuffy in the bedrooms. The front desk were not very helpful, mostly due to the communication problems. Only one woman spoke english, and she was sympathetic, but basically could do nothing. The hotel is very beautiful, in a wonderful garden setting, views of the water, etc. and it is a shame that making their guests comfortable is not nearer the top of their list of services.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2003

Do not be misled by 5 star rating. It is more of a "local Ischia rating system" as the island on the whole is a bit run down. The hotel is tastefully furnished and the day-time lady at the reception was very helpful but that's where the good things end. The air-conditioning was not making the room any cooler. The room was not cleaned 2 days running just because when it came to our room we happened to be there and the cleaning lady did not bother to come back again. The reviews say it is 50 ms from the sea but it does not say anywhere that it is a harbour and you can't swim there. When you book they tell you that there is a shuttle that takes you to a nice private beach but nobody tells you that it is not complimentary and you have to pay 22 EUR(!!!) per person per day to be able to use it. The rooms with a sea view are better but don't expect to see much of the sea - you can hardly see it from those rooms! It looks relatively inexpensive for a 5 star hotel with halfboard (we paid 198 EUR per room off-season) but when you are there you know it is expensive for what you are getting. On the whole if you are looking for a beach vacation Ischia is not the place to go as there are very few beaches there and they are not easy to access. This is an addition to my previous review. The breakfast is very basic and boring!
