“Perfect for Us”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

We were driving, so we wanted a spot off the beaten path but not too far out. This pension was perfect for us. We had a room with a double bed and two singles, a small porch and a bath. The room was clean and adequate in size. The furnishings are a bit dated, but that shouldn't interfere with your stay. The breakfast is in a room where you can look up at the Ehrenburg ruins. The owner and staff are friendly. Breakfast was terrific. Reutte is a quiet town, so if you're looking for nightlife, this is not the place for you, but if you want to see where real Austrians live, shop and eat, this is a great place.

“Great value and amazing views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2009

My husband and I stayed two nights, and were very impressed by the value of this pension. My only problem was there was a slight musty smell, and I am very sensitive to smells. Other than that, it was perfect. We had amazing views of the ruins, which we hiked to one evening -- a highlight of our two-week Europe trip. We didn't mind that they didn't have a resturaunt -- we just visited a nearby spot. The bathroom was very small, but the shutters closed to make a pitched-black room and the beds were very comfortable. The area is just breathtaking. We are planning to stop here again on another trip.

“Lovely place, great value!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2009

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the Waldrast on May 13ht and 14th, 2009. We originally had a reservation at another pension in Reutte but we arrived late and there was no one there, so we ended up finding the Pension Waldrast as we were going towards the city to find ourselves a hotel. Although it was almost 11:00PM Mr Huter received us with a smile and was able to arrange a room for us.
Our room was great, it had a very comfortable bed, full bathroom and also a small living room, and for our surprise it had a balcony with an amazing view of 2 of the area castles. Breakfast was great too and Mr Huter was always very friendly and helped us with any questions we had about the area.
I definitely recommend the Pension if you are making Reutte your home base to visit the Bavarian Castles in the area.
Tip: Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau are nearby and in the same area but if you have a chance go check out the Linderhof Palace as well, it is very impressive.

“So Peaceful!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2008

Located in the tiny town of Ehenbichl, just outside of Reutte, Austria. The Pension Waldrast has been around for a long time! Lots of old pictures on the wall...some from the 1930's. Another person posted that it was like staying at Gramma's house and I have to agree. The decor and furnishings aren't the latest and greatest but everything is clean and comfortable.
Our room (#12) was actually very large. I think it may have been considered a triple even though we only reserved a double. There were down comforters on the bed which are great! In addition to the double bed, there was a sofa (or single bed?) beneath the windows. There was even a little room between the bedroom and toilet room. I believe this was intended as a sitting/TV area, it also had a small table and chairs.
One of the nicest features of this room was the view. We had our own little balcony that overlooked the Ehrenberg Castle ruins. Granted, we couldn't figure out how to open the door to the balcony...that was a skill we perfected at the next place we stayed! Still, the view from the window, especially when the ruins were illuminated at night, was beautiful!
The bathroom was an unusual set up. There was a little toilet room (closet?) that didn't connect to the rest of the bathroom. Not a problem...just odd. The sink and shower area were very tiny and located just inside the entryway to the room. There was no door to this area, just a curtain. The shower wasn't large but it wasn't the smallest we encountered on the trip. No hair dryer here.
Breakfast was included in the price and we were the only ones in the dining room on both mornings. (Except for the owners' new puppy, Picasso - very sweet and well behaved.) Breakfast was the traditional bread, meats, cheeses, museli, juice.
Felt like the 60 Euro price for a double was a fair price. Mom also had a room for 37 Euro.

“Decent, Very Quiet Country Gasthaus”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2007

We booked directly with Pension Garni Waldrast via phone a few weeks before our departure. The man of the house seems to speak better English than his wife, so better to make reservations through him.
1. LOCATION: The pension is located on a small two lane road slightly away fom the center of town. While there are no other buildings near Pension Waldrast, there is a hospital just down the road as well as another neighborhood, so there are a few cars going by ~ locals ~ during the day (no ambulances or anyhting like that!). I asked the owner/wife about car noise...she said that at night there is no traffic ~ which was true for the most part. Pretty quiet at night.
There is a large grassy open space directly behind the pension, with the 2 castle ruins within view. Probably a 30-45 minute hike. Looks like they run a famly ski operation inthe wintertime from the looks of some of the otehr buildings. The road has a sign mentioning "Via Augustus" so I think it's near the old Roman road.
For the most part, the location is quiet and pristine.

2. ROOM: The lodge and our room was pretty dated as stated in other reviews, but I did not mind at all. It's kind of like visiting your grandmother's house or something. They have interesting photo's & old maps & stuff on the walls. The building is a big old austrian structure that creeks a little when you walk upstairs. The place is kind of dimly lit at times. Very quiet, not sure how many other people were statying there at the time ~ a few cars in the lot. The room was very clean, nice bedding, good sized room. Small TV w/remote with all austrian channels. The room (114)has a very nice sized balcony, but overlooked the road with wooded area across street (not bad). I was very satisfied with the condition and layout of the room. Couch, chairs and coffee table seemed a little cramped.
The bathroom was kind of average if not below average. First, no soap or shampoo ~ which seems kind of common in Europe budget hotels we stayed at. Bring your own just in case. One of the lights above vanity was burned out, so kind of dim. Shower had sliding door stall. Good water pressure and abundant hot water. Towels were clean if not a little thin, but acceptable. Overall, I was happy with the room and slept very well.

3.AMMENITIES: There is a restaurant, but I don't really think it is used much. The breakfast (Rolls - not super fresh but edible, butter, jams, Musli-cereal, milk, juice) is waiting for you early in the morning if you choose to eat it ~ I did) I could smell dinner being cooked in the evenings, so I'm assuming someone ate there, or maybe it was the family.

4. OVERALL RATING. I gave this place 3 stars, more like 3.5. It's a family run B&B basically that is very quiet and peaceful. It's like staying at a family's home, but not having alot of contact with them. Cleanliness is good, food is basic (breakfast) and service is OK, (language barrier is sort of hard ~ they speak mainly German) The location is kind of away fromthe town, so you might want to have a car, alothough you can walk down the lane. We were mainly doing the Nueschwanstien, Fussen, thing, so didn't really do much in Reutte. Also, the town shuts down at night big time, so don't expect 24 hour convenience stores at 3am type of town. I would reccomend this Pension, especially if you are doing the hiking/nature thing or want alot of quiet. Email me with any questions! ~Bart
