“Decent, Very Quiet Country Gasthaus”

We booked directly with Pension Garni Waldrast via phone a few weeks before our departure. The man of the house seems to speak better English than his wife, so better to make reservations through him.
1. LOCATION: The pension is located on a small two lane road slightly away fom the center of town. While there are no other buildings near Pension Waldrast, there is a hospital just down the road as well as another neighborhood, so there are a few cars going by ~ locals ~ during the day (no ambulances or anyhting like that!). I asked the owner/wife about car noise...she said that at night there is no traffic ~ which was true for the most part. Pretty quiet at night.
There is a large grassy open space directly behind the pension, with the 2 castle ruins within view. Probably a 30-45 minute hike. Looks like they run a famly ski operation inthe wintertime from the looks of some of the otehr buildings. The road has a sign mentioning "Via Augustus" so I think it's near the old Roman road.
For the most part, the location is quiet and pristine.

2. ROOM: The lodge and our room was pretty dated as stated in other reviews, but I did not mind at all. It's kind of like visiting your grandmother's house or something. They have interesting photo's & old maps & stuff on the walls. The building is a big old austrian structure that creeks a little when you walk upstairs. The place is kind of dimly lit at times. Very quiet, not sure how many other people were statying there at the time ~ a few cars in the lot. The room was very clean, nice bedding, good sized room. Small TV w/remote with all austrian channels. The room (114)has a very nice sized balcony, but overlooked the road with wooded area across street (not bad). I was very satisfied with the condition and layout of the room. Couch, chairs and coffee table seemed a little cramped.
The bathroom was kind of average if not below average. First, no soap or shampoo ~ which seems kind of common in Europe budget hotels we stayed at. Bring your own just in case. One of the lights above vanity was burned out, so kind of dim. Shower had sliding door stall. Good water pressure and abundant hot water. Towels were clean if not a little thin, but acceptable. Overall, I was happy with the room and slept very well.

3.AMMENITIES: There is a restaurant, but I don't really think it is used much. The breakfast (Rolls - not super fresh but edible, butter, jams, Musli-cereal, milk, juice) is waiting for you early in the morning if you choose to eat it ~ I did) I could smell dinner being cooked in the evenings, so I'm assuming someone ate there, or maybe it was the family.

4. OVERALL RATING. I gave this place 3 stars, more like 3.5. It's a family run B&B basically that is very quiet and peaceful. It's like staying at a family's home, but not having alot of contact with them. Cleanliness is good, food is basic (breakfast) and service is OK, (language barrier is sort of hard ~ they speak mainly German) The location is kind of away fromthe town, so you might want to have a car, alothough you can walk down the lane. We were mainly doing the Nueschwanstien, Fussen, thing, so didn't really do much in Reutte. Also, the town shuts down at night big time, so don't expect 24 hour convenience stores at 3am type of town. I would reccomend this Pension, especially if you are doing the hiking/nature thing or want alot of quiet. Email me with any questions! ~Bart

“OK, but”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2007

My wife and 12 yo dau stayed here for a night in August 2007. I will say that we were rushed - late to arrive to the area because of a train delay and had to leave early the next morning. So our experience was limited. There were no problems with the reservations. It was a little difficult for us to find at first since it is not right in town but more on the outskirts. Check-in was a bit offputting. An older woman (the owner?) was conversing at the front desk with one of her friends about nothing emergent (I speak fluent German) as I waited patiently for a minute or so. Rather than hang up and deal with me, she finally she got what I assume may have been here granddaughter to check us in. She was nice and efficient. The triple room was clean enough. The decor is certainly dated. Really the only problem was that the bathroom had a pretty strong urine smell. I would have spoken with someone at the desk, but it was unoccupied and I couldn't find anyone. We were anxious to eat because it was getting late so we left for the evening and didn't resolve this. Had we not been leaving early the next morning, I would have addressed it. We ate at the Hotel Maximillian nearby where we had a great meal out on the patio - I would definitely recommend it for the food.

We had to leave between 7 and 8 the next morning and again I couldn't find anyone to service us at the front desk. I just left the fee and the key on the desk and figured it was just kind of a family, country place where service is a bit leisurely, so it didn't bother me. Our train delay cost us nearly a day so we did not have time to see Ehrenburg or anything else in Reutte. I would have like to see the ruins and spent another night but we had a pre-arranged rendezvous the next day so could not stay.

“Simple and peaceful hotel in a stunning setting!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2007

Our family spent 2 nights at the Waldrast in late May 2007. The hotel is off a small road (a tiny bit of noise at night but FAR less than any other hotel in the entire area of Ehenbichl - just outside of Reutte). The hotel is surrounded by beautiful meadows and no other hotels or other businesses or buildings. Our room had a balcony with a view of the ruins of Ehrenberg Castle. The Huter family, the owners, were delightful and very kind. They made breakfast for us a half-hour before they officially began serving so that we would make our Castle tour on time for Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau (about a 25 minute drive tops). DH and I hiked up to the ruins one night and it took us (brisk pace) from about 8:45pm to 10pm roundtrip. The path is just behind the hotel. Breakfast was good and consisted of the usual Austrian/Bavarian fare - rolls, breads, jams, yogurt, meats, cheeses, and excellent coffee. Mr. Huter speaks very good English and was kind enough to provide us with a map of the area and directions to the Castles.
We enjoyed eating at the Hotel Maximillian about 5 minutes away - we ate there twice. The restaurant there was fantastic but the hotel is in a bit busier of an area than the Waldrast. The location of the Waldrast is serenity itself. The rooms are large and most appear to have last been redecorated several decades ago. The beds were comfortable and the place was immaculately clean. We will be coming back and staying here again... hopefully for a longer stay so that we can do several of the hikes in the area.
As a last tip - do not miss the museum at the entrance to the Ehrenburg Castle ruins. We were shocked to discover how wonderful it is - the best museum in terms of layout, interactive displays, and content that we have seen in 5 years of traveling throughout Europe. Tons to do for kids!

“Rick Steves was right”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2006

Beautiful area near Neuschwanstein, Garmisch, the Baroque Road in Germany and in Tyrol. Was mentioned in Rick Steves' book and we stayed two days. Wonderful family owners with huge Irish wolfhound (nothing fazes that dog). We were the only guests. Rooms furnished ski chalet style (they also run a ski school) and are charming. Less than $50 for a single with large private bathroom and shower and the best breakfast we had in 12 days in central Europe.

Easily located in the dark when drove all the way from Berchetesgaden. Just remember to turn at the McDonalds!

Above the pension are the ruins of Ehrenburg fortress and another castle. You are surrounded by Alps. Less than a half hour to Fussen and Neuschwanstein (by untouristed roads). Also an easy drive to Imst and the long valleys of Austria (Kauerntal, Inntal, Oetztal) and great skiing, or to St. Anton.

They recommended a Yugoslavian/Tirolean restaurant down the road which had good, inexpensive food, lotsa locals and a couple shots of free schnapps for us.

Highly recommend. This would make a great family center for touring Austria and southern Germany
