We chose this hotel from the its website because the pictures showed a modern style, on a good beach with a gourmet restaurant. These facilities came a little expensive for Koh Chang but it was our Wedding Anniversary, so we splashed out on this Hotel.
By email we were offered the best room, 407(a pool villa) because we were to stay 8 night s. So we arrived from Bangkok via a five hour bus & ferry trip on the 20th November to our shock and horror!
I must point out this resort is in 3 areas the old 'Hillside' block are on the other side of the very busy road, which is where the Island taxi drops you off to check in. Apparently our Villa reception was on the opposite side of the road with the new block right on the main road. It was not only confusing but a bad start and bad checking in service. It all appears as one big plot on the website.
The new front of the hotel was littered with litter & broken pathways. The hotels coffee shop which is set at the front of reception area was untidy inside with tables of uncollected coffee beakers left around on them. So we continued to try and find our entrance with no concierge around to help us with our suitcases we dragged them into a very sparse reception to find the reception/ check in area there, in total disarray which was not the welcome we expected from a luxurious 4 * Hotel and Not as their Internet advert description:- 'Designed to offer every comfort and refinement. High quality facilities and commitment to exceptional service. Ensure that all guests have a relaxing and memorable stay'.
We eventually were shown to our pool villa(407) It was sold to us as the best Villa they had. It was overdue a refurbishment with broken wood, stained and marked furniture and fabrics and we had to pay a deposit for the key.. It's location was great with water surrounding it all bar one side. All the windows needed cleaning and this was the case throughout the complex. The grounds leading down to the 'man made beach' was unkempt and needed lots of rubbish & dead leaves picking up. You access the sea down concrete steps covered in sea slime and have a rickety old and broken bamboo hand rail.
The plants were dying from lack of water and some of the wooden pathways needed repairing. The pool was cloudy due to old, dead leaves floating around it & had sunk into the bottom. Plenty of light bulbs needed replacing in the villa, outside & in the pool and some of the many steps were not under-lit in the dark, which was dangerous. There was no torch in the villa and there is a lot of power cuts on the Island.
There were plenty of Staff around chatting to each other or hiding away but were not doing anything constructive.
On the first evening we went out into the street to get our bearings and you could not help but hear the noisy bars opposite and along the road side. When we reached the road we discovered that they were all girls selling sex and calling out to every passer by, even couples. The loud disco music goes on until after midnight and was easily heard from our villa the farthest from the street and nearest to the beach.
All in all we did complain to the Manager who was totally useless and lazy.
He offered us a free meal to appease us but we declined his offer and asked for discount on the high room rate as we did not feel it was worth what we had paid for it. He told us we would have to contact the owner for this and they said it was for us to sort out with the Manager when they eventually responded after the 7 emails sent to them over a week. So when we came to the end of our stay and the morning we were to leave we went to settle up (less our deposit paid already by bank transfer from U.K)with the Manager, he had called in the Police(who carry guns) and told them that we were going to leave without payment of the final bill! They were poised to take us to the Police Station to arrest us both, a 64yr old couple with suitcases and transferring just to another local Island for 6 nights. I ask you?
Be warned - Do not pay for your accommodation in advance by Bank Transfer in full in Thailand - there is no arguing with their laws!
