I've sat back and read the reviews of many people who have stayed at the Mark Addy and given careful thought to our stay as well. My husband and I have traveled various places and generally speaking - I'm pretty picky, but also a realist. Anyone who desires to stay at a bed and breakfast should realize that part of the nuance of staying there are the quirks that make it different than staying in the Hampton Inn or some cookie cutter suite at another hotel. I found it charming. There's a piano in the front parlor where they encourage guests to play and a fire burning in the front entryway as you enter the house - especially nice for our December arrival.
It's true that the Mark Addy does allow smoking and the owner was sitting on the porch off to the side smoking when we arrived, but he also quickly rose out of his chair and greeted us warmly. He gave us a tour of the entire Inn and did his best to make us feel at home. When I had questions about the vouchers for the wine tours (I thought some were missing but they were not - I hadn't read the detailed directions they had left), I came and asked he and his wife for information and they very patiently - even cheerfully - told me all about which wineries required the vouchers and which did not. During our stay I also asked for more information about which wineries we should go it in what order, etc, according to when they opened and Leslie was quite helpful. I had found a coupon on the web on my phone and she even let me email it to her and she printed it out so I could use it in town. These are all little things, but I sure appreciate people who do the little things - don't you?
We stayed in the Colonel and I had booked it kind of at the last moment as a get away for my husband and I. The room was well appointed with a large flat screen mounted on the wall in such a way that it could be hidden. It also had two big recliners by a window and small table that served us well for our late night cheese, crackers, fruit and wine that we hunted down from the local businesses during the day. The tub was a soaking tub and they had let us know that ahead of time that the jets were not working in that room and to be honest - I was thankful we got the reservation and did not feel it was unfair to have rented a room where they disclosed that to me in advance. They also informed us that the Colonel's tub will be fixed in January - so lucky are the people who get it in Feb.! The main thing was that it was quiet, very quiet. There were no cell phones ringing, no children calling my name and things were clean. As far as I am concerned - if you're honest with me and all those things are in place - we're good to go for a getaway weekend. Leslie also mentioned that I could peek in the rooms that were not rented if I liked to get an idea for another visit and so I did... and I would have to honestly say that every room I looked in was beautiful. My husband was shy at first, but when he looked in, he said the same thing and not much impresses him.
Breakfast was great each morning - no complaints from us, we thought the food was tasty and well prepared. I still want that quiche recipe Leslie! Rafael did the cooking and serving with Leslie very kindly offering refills and making sure of whether we needed anything. Everything was tasty and filling. I found them to be quite accommodating as I listened to them cater to someone that seemed to be a vegetarian and another couple that had special needs with their diet. Another lady had brought her children and I listened to Leslie make every effort to be sure that the children were engaged and happy at each breakfast. Honestly, that impressed me more than anything.
Yes there is a dog and I think his name is Cody? He is the cutest thing ever. He's black and looked like he stuck a paw in an electrical socket (in a good way!:) and is part deaf and was quite quiet. It actually made us feel right at home to have him wander here and there. He did NOT beg, not even once, and I was quite friendly to him - so honestly - I was the perfect target if the animal wanted to beg but he was more fascinated with checking out the overall situation.
As for the price, I feel that the Sun - Thurs living social deal with breakfast and wineries was absolutely exceptional. 279 for 2 nights, 3 course breakfast each morning, 4 or 5 wine tastings for two (i forget), chocolates upon arrival, 2 bottles of wine and a beer tasting too? Are you kidding me? I was on that. We had to modify our price a bit to go over part a weekday and part of a weekend and again, so it cost a bit more, but Leslie worked with us on that as well. I guess what I am saying is... It was a great place to stay... private... staff that helps but doesn't get in the way.... I'd go again in a heartbeat... I just gotta find the time! Hope all of this info helps somebody!
