My husband and I spent one night at Suites at 249 and it was one of the best hotel experiences I have ever had. We didn’t want to leave. I have stayed in many hotels and never have I had one exceed my expectations the way this one did. I booked The Sole Suite, as the Verde and Aqua (the ones I really wanted) were already booked. I was a bit hesitant as it didn’t have a balcony or the steam shower like the upstairs suites do but I decided to go for it anyways because it was the largest. This room was wonderful in every way. It was extremely spacious, very airy, and full of light even though it was on the basement floor. If you get a chance to book this room, DO IT!! It’s so amazing for the following reasons:
Entrance/Location: This suite is on the basement floor, meaning you have to actually walk down a flight of stairs from the lobby/check in area of the hotel. The perk to this is that the Sole Suite has its own entrance at the back of the building and you even get your own parking space in the back as well (right by the entrance to the room so you don’t have to worry if you have lots of bags). It makes it seem like this room is your own little paradise. It didn’t even feel like this suite was in the basement because there are multiple windows and the door to the outside (to the parking area) is glass so it lets in tons of light.
Layout: This suite has two king beds separated by a wall (the separating wall houses the closet for the first king). It is a full wall (from floor to ceiling) that comes halfway through the room so there is plenty of space in the each of the king ‘rooms’ but could also allow for privacy if needed.
Closets: This suite has 2 huge closets, one is even a full walk in. Both have built in shelves and plenty of wooden hangers to hang up your clothes. There are also plenty of suitcase stands in each closet (I counted 5).
Iron: The iron actually works. Like actually STEAMS. What a wonderful change from the crappy irons usually provided at hotels.
TV: There are two TV’s in the Sole suite, though we only used one. The one we used was fantastic. It was large and had a ton of channels (even premium movie channels). The TV was the perfect distance from the bed so movie watching was very relaxing.
Bathroom: The bathroom is absolutely fantastic. Very roomy with two sinks and a lot of counter space. We really liked the hand and body soap provided – it is a thick round bar of soap, not a flimsy piece of nothing usually provided in hotels. This suite also has a 3rd sink out in the room so if someone is using the bathroom, you can still brush your teeth/face and whatnot. It is also nice to have that sink when you want to brush your teeth and don’t want to miss anything on the TV! I was a bit nervous at first about the shower as the upstairs suites (Aqua, Verde, and Terra) have the steam showers while the others don’t. The shower was still wonderful, large enough for two people and supplied with ample toiletries. There was also a real bathmat, not a square towel called a bathmat. Also, the bathroom was stocked with towels and the bath towels are oversized, no tiny ‘mini skirt’ type towels at this place.
Bedding: Ah, the bedding. As another reviewer said, there are not enough positive adjectives in the dictionary to describe how wonderful the bed is. It was soft and warm and very very very clean (and the bedding is all white so you would be able to tell if it was dirty). We only used one bed in the suite but I am sure the other is exactly the same. I am normally a get up and go type of person when taking trips but this hotel room, with its wonderful, extremely comfortable and snuggly bedding, made us want to not do anything and just stay in!
Lighting: As I said above, this room surprised me with its abundance of natural light for a basement level room. As far as artificial lighting goes, this room was decked out with both track lighting (which also had dimmers) and real 3 setting real lamps. No cheesy lighting in this hotel, it was like being at home!
Décor: The décor in this room is tasteful, trendy, and aesthetically perfect. I am into interior decorating myself so I was very excited when I saw the pictures online before booking the Sole Suite - it looks exactly like it does in the pictures. The decorator did just enough, without over crowding the space, and used clean lines and bright punches of color. There were even a couple of pictures I wish I could have taken home!
Cleanliness: This suite was so clean, I couldn’t even find dust or dirt if I tried. My husband even rubbed his finger over the top of the headboard and there was no dust or dirt. I was VERY impressed with how clean the entire room was, from the shower to the beds themselves to the floor. I walked around the entire time in my bare feet and the bottoms of my feet never got dirty.
Privacy: This suite is about as private as it gets. If you are looking for a space to call your own without any interruptions, this is it. We didn’t see anyone else from the hotel while we were there minus when we checked in. This is the only room on the basement floor. Also, the windows have excellent blinds and the door has curtains so you don’t have to worry at all about others seeing in.
I made the following observations while in this room, these are not complaints, just observations that I thought others might be interested in:
*As the Sole Suite is in the basement, there are water pipes running across the ceiling for the sprinkler system (you can see them in the pictures). They are not obtrusive at all and painted white but they are visible. You can also hear when other people on the floor above you flush their toilets or run their water. We heard it a few times, it was not extremely loud but you can hear it.
*You can also hear people walking above you when you are in the bathroom of the suite. We heard it when people were walking in the hallway of the hotel which had wood floors, not in the actual suites themselves. We did hear it quite a bit in the morning when getting ready. It was only in the bathroom and not in the sleeping area of the suite so it did not bother us.
*Something I wish I had brought with me were slippers as the floor of the room is concrete (very aesthetically done of course). It was a bit chilly so if you are a slipper wearer like me, I would suggest bringing them.
*Check in took about ten seconds. We walked in, the owner (I am assuming as I recognized her voice from when I called the hotel previously), gave us a card with wifi/key in code, explained the keyless entry, told us our room was down the stairs and about the parking space. And that was it. I personally loved it but if you are a person who likes to interface with others, this hotel is definitely not for you. It is what I call an ‘independent stay.’ You are on your own as no one mans the desk during the day, there are no phones in the room to call the front desk if you need anything (though you can call the owner at any time I believe, we did not need to so I am not sure), and we didn’t see a soul the whole time. My husband and I both loved it but if you are one who enjoys the typical bed and breakfast type stay, this hotel is definitely not that.
*I did not know that the hotel had a AAA discount until I read it on another review on Trip Advisor. I had already booked the room so I emailed the owner asking if I could get the AAA rate instead. She changed it in a matter of hours so there were no problems, just wish there was somewhere on the hotel’s actual website that stated what discounts they offer.
*My husband and I drink lots of bottled water (we brought some with us along with what was offered in the hotel’s fridge) so we had a lot of bottles to throw away. I noticed that there was no small recycle bin or trash can marked for recycle in the room. My only suggestion is to add a recycle receptacle of some sort so guests could throw recyclable items in there.
Random Notes About Culpeper: The purpose of our visit in Culpeper was to go to some of the wineries in the area that we had never been too (my husband and I are very into wine). We went to Gray Ghost and Unicorn. Both had very nice staff, good ambiance (though were very different from each other), and decent wines. We went to dinner at Foti’s, which was delicious. I had read that the service could be bad at times but we had wonderful service and had no complaints. My only complaint about Culpeper, like others have said, is that there is no nightlife. And when I say no nightlife, I literally mean none. The streets were empty come 7:30 pm. We were there on a Sunday night so perhaps that is why it was so empty. The next day, we walked around a bit and a ton of places were closed though it was a holiday (Martin Luther King Day) so that made sense. Either way, Culpeper is not the place to go if you want a bumping, happening on the go type feel.
I had read almost all of the reviews on Trip Advisor before I booked at Suites at 249 so I thought I knew what to expect (and to be honest, was worried about this hotel letting me down as my expectations were so high). This boutique hotel is wonderful in every way - my husband and I are already talking about coming back in March to take advantage of the Buy One Night, Get the Second Half Off deal going on right now. In case you couldn’t get this from my novel above – definitely stay here!! :)
