Since I can't give a half-star, I'm going with four. The hotel did many things right and really nothing wrong, but I was only there for one night - so I feel like some of the things that usually win me over such as a great staff, etc., didn't have the opportunity to do so. I stayed in this hotel for a particular, personal reason on this trip, and would probably look around if I came back to C-Ville to be closer to downtown - but would have no issues if I was made to stay here again.
Positives:
- Great room rate - got a government leisure rate for $88 pretax, including the breakfast buffet for 2 adults and 2 kids.
- Solid Doubletree breakfast - omelets to order, some fresh fruit, etc. I've had better (including at other DTs) and don't know the specific costs since it was included in my rate, but it's absolutely a step above many "hot breakfasts" included at hotels.
- Had a nice restaurant and bar on site, although kind of small. Didn't try it out, but it seemed pleasant and was close to full. It's nice to not have to leave the hotel or resort to expensive room service to eat.
- Beds were typical comfortable Doubletree bed.
- Free parking.
- Nice size room, included comfortable chair for sitting at desk and a mini-fridge.
- Staff was very friendly in limited interactions.
Negatives:
- HDTVs with no/limited HD service always makes broadcasts look worse.
- Location isn't great - it's about 3 or 4 miles north of the university off of 29, and overlooks strip malls and Sam's Club. Easily accessible if you have a car though.
- Some elements of hotel are out of date - the phone system did not call the wake-up call line (either by dialing or by button) and I had to personally contact the front desk.
- The bathroom was abnormally small, at least in my room. Not enough room to turn around with the door open.
- First floor of hotel leading to gym/pool from elevators is under construction and has musty/paint smell and look. Pool and gym are accessible via staircase from the lobby - where you avoid all of the construction/renovation.
This is a good hotel, by any stretch - if it offered the same everything, but was closer to downtown, I'd have no hesitation about returning, and certainly at the rate I got. The location would make me look around though, but there's nothing that the staff or anyone at the hotel can do about that!
