“Nice place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We enjoyed one night here for a birthday get-away. The room, furnishings, and overall feel of the room was very nice. We had one problem, with our booking. We requested a King room and once we came to our room, it was only a Queen. Apparently there were renovations being done, and the King room wasn't ready upon our arrival. The staff called and left a message on our home phone, but it was left on the day of our arrival and we didn't receive the message. At check-in, we were confirmed by the clerk of a King room, but that isn't what we received. We stayed in the Main Inn, and it was nice..just not a great plan for notifying guests of changes to their rooms.

“BOARS HEAD ,Charlottesville, Va -- GREAT GET-AWAY from DC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The Boars Head was an excellent winter get away for our anniversary and birthday January 24 and 26, 2012. The food was good, the indoor tennis courts were excellent, the service was fantastic, and we enjoyed the walk around the lake with many ducks and an egret.

Charlottesville, the nearby vineyards, the mountains, many excellent restaurants were all part of an enjoyable get away. We will return.

“Country charm + a dash of luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Stayed at the Boar's Head for a wedding, and had an amazing time! I grew up in Charlottesville, and it is definitely known to be the "go-to" place for special occasions, and the reputation is well deserved. This is not one of the new modern mega-hotels, and doesn't try to be. There's lots of antique furniture, dark woods, and leather scattered about giving it a cozy, but elegant atmosphere.

We stayed in a very quaint room overlooking the lake that was extremely spacious, including a huge balcony. Only the bathroom was a little tight, but that's understandable considering the age of the place. The shower made up for it, with good water pressure, a huge shower head, and soaps/shampoos that smelled great! I'm pretty short, so the bed was a little too high for me, but I just pushed an ottoman next to the bed to get in and out comfortably.

As for the facilities, the grounds are beautiful, even in the winter. The banquet food for the wedding, was just OK, but we went to the bar afterward, and I got a shrimp/prawn cocktail that was amazing. The next day for brunch with the bride/groom, we went to the brunch buffet, which was excellent and had lots of variety of hot/cold foods.

I hope I have a reason to stay here again, because overall it was a spectacular time.

This is a great hotel for a nice weekend escape. We chose the Date Night Package and really enjoyed a relaxing evening at The Boar's Head.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the lake.

“Great setting, quality fading”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Recently returned to the Boar's Head which I've stayed at many times. This was the first time I stayed at the Main Inn. It was convenient and I really enjoyed relaxing by the warm fireplace in the sitting room off the lobby. However, quality seems to have slipped. My bed did not have a fitted sheet on it, and it only covered half of the depth of the mattress. As you can imagine, by morning the sheet was partially off the bed which didn't really encourage me to stay in the sack. Bathroom was clean, but out-dated, shower was in a big tub. TV was an old clunky one. Found old sock next to a chair. But you are ready for a lot of that in these classic hotels. What I truly missed were the little touches that made the Boar's Head a charming hotel in the past - fresh flowers, magazines of the region (fine shopping, real estate, etc.) which provides a warm setting. I'll probably be back but would request to stay out of the main inn.
