“Fabulously comfortable and convenient”

I wanted a place to stay near Burlington, VT, but not downtown. I had visited Vergennes before and found it a lovely little town (sorry, *city*--one of the smallest cities in the US! :-) I looked at the B&B options online and picked the Emerson. What a lucky choice! The hosts are friendly and helpful but not pushy. The house is lovely, furnished with old furniture that is not so "antique" that you're worried about using it. There's a resident dog who is beautiful and charming and very pleased to interact with people, but the hosts are quick to shoo him out if he seems likely to bother anyone.

I had a wonderfully comfortable bedroom and shared a bathroom (which is much less bother than some travelers would have one believe--I think only once did I find it occupied, and I came back shortly there after and was able to shower in peace.)

Vergennes is a great location to base a holiday in central Vermont, and the hosts were happy to help one find attractions, places to eat or drink, shops, etc. Their breakfasts were excellent! I stayed nearly a week and only had the same breakfast companions once or twice, but the other guests always seemed most interesting and agreeable.

I highly recommend the Emerson to anyone thinking of staying in the area!

“Beautiful setting and gracious host.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2010

My wife and I had a wonderful time at Emerson Guest House, which we chose since it was a short walk from the annual French-Canadian festival. We had delicious full breakfasts each morning, and there was a piano which we were welcomed to play. The host is a professional performer who entertained us with his fabulous singing. We stayed in the Meadow Room, which overlooks a huge back yard and is very quiet at night. The French-Canadian festival itself was much better than I expected, with a young accordion player from Burlington and a large Quebecois family where the youngest members had the most talent. There were also creative crafts for sale in the town green. The best nearby restaurant is the elegant Black Sheep Bistro.

“A warm welcome, and a great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2010

Let me just say, right off the bat, how welcoming the owner/manager Bill was. From the very moment my fiance and I entered the house, he made sure we felt like family. This did not decrease at any point in our stay. The house itself is beautiful, and our room (the meadows room) was looking out over the gorgeous back yard. We slept peacefully, without any noise interference aside from occasional floorboard creaking from another guest. (its an old house, so it was expected, and really wasn't annoying or loud) Breakfast was served between 8 and 9, though Bill was felxable according to the guests needs. Portions were generous, quality was excellent, and overall it was quite healthy. Overall, for the price paid and the experience of being there, it was a tremendous value. We especially recommend this place to travelers who like a real Family environment and enjoy breakfast with strangers, as all the guests sit around one large table in the morning. We will definately return on future trips to the area!

“Period charm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2008

Vergennes is a sleepy little place with an air of period charm about it, and this guest house is in keeping with that aura (although the lady at the Lake Champlain Museum - a must visit - assured us that it is a vibrant community with a lot going on). As the address implies, the Emerson is on Main Street, about 10 minutes walk from the "centre" (which includes the Black Sheep Bistro, which is everything the other reviews say it is). The room was quite the biggest we occupied in the whole trip, with polished wooden floor and original shutters, complete with a huge bed and en-suite bathroom/shower. The bad news is that it was at the front of the house so we listened to the trucks grind up the hill all night. But the welcome was warm, the place was clean and quiet (apart from the trucks) and Bill was quick to reserve us a table at the Black Sheep for dinner. Breakfast was hot, freshly cooked and generous. At about $125 per night for two including breakfast, the Emerson is fair value for money.
