I booked my reservation on one of the leading travel websites. According to that travel website, there were no single queen/king beds available for my stay. This being the height of leaf-peeping season, I understood and settled for a highly priced room with two double beds. I called approximately a week prior to my check-in date. The woman who answered the phone, who sounded as though she has just finished her fourth pack of cigs for the day, was incredibly unfriendly, abrasive and made me feel as if I had disturbed her by having the audacity to ring her telephone. I asked her to put me down for a single room should one become available, to which she snarked "well, I have them available," as if I were a schmuck for having missed the memo.
To make a long story short, apparently the price of the single bed was significantly more and she was absolutely unwilling, despite her admitted availability, to switch the room at my already exorbitant rate should one be available AT THE TIME I CHECK IN. Now, I've worked for the hotel industry for 5 years. Hotel rooms, like heads of lettuce, are perishable commodities. If the room doesn't sell that night, you lose the value of the room. It would be better to sell the room at reasonably less than its listing price than to not sell it at all. Apparently someone needs to give HER the memo. Anyway, all I was trying to do is plan a nice romantic getaway with my significant other. I just thought sleeping in separate beds might diminish the experience. Apparently the staff at the T-Bird could give a rat's behind.
As for the room itself? It was unimpressive; it smelled of smoke residue and there was hair in my shower. When I called the front desk on three separate occasions for a wake up call there was no answer. And, the total cost for my troubles exceeded $500... for two nights.. at a motor inn! Most of which I could deal with, except for the unfriendly reception. Staying in a shoddy "motor inn" with rude and abrasive staff for insanely high prices was a last resort option in the first place, given that this is big tourist time for Burlington, VT. Next time, I'd cancel my trip altogether before I resort to staying here.
Room Tip: Don't book a room expecting to negotiate for a different one later. Apparently, this motor inn...
