“Not getting better with time- still the only game in town”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

It had been over a year since my last visit to this hotel, and I was hoping it may have gotten better, but it's not. To start, I waited about 25 minutes to check in because there was some sort of computer problem. The clerk apologized, but didn't seem to have any idea how to fix the problem and was obviously annoyed at my presence.

The rooms here have never been glamorous, but historically they had been at least well kept. The pictures I took show the state of the room upon arrival- the grubby tub and unkept bed is exactly how I found it.

In summary, this is still the must pick option of all the hotels in the central Vermont area- and it would be fine for $75/ night but at $150 (and that's when you get a good deal)- it's a total rip off. I recently stayed at a Comfort Inn that was 100 times nicer for 1/3 the price. If you are traveling to Vermont for pleasure and you don't HAVE to stay in Montpelier- I highly recommend commuting the extra 30 minutes to Burlington or considering one of the inns in Stowe.

Dear Yainey,

Thank you for staying with us and for your review. We strive to provide the highest level of service and amenities to our guests. I have shared the review with our front desk staff and housekeeping staff to address your concerns. Last summer we selected the 32" LED TV in your room because it was energy efficient. Just this past month, we replaced the TV's on the 3rd and 4th floors with 40" LED TVs. The Colonial Rooms and Suites have 46" LED TV's. The bedding is a down comfortor with duvet changed daily, and if not fluffed properly, will settle. The housekeeping supervisor will work more closely with her staff to ensure done correctly.

Please contact me the next time you are visiting us so that I can ensure everything is perfect.
Thank you,
Lilli Cain

“Great location, OK - a little pricey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

We stayed at the hotel for first night 2012 - the hotel is very conveniently located, with free parking behind the hotel. We chose this location to walk to local restaurants / venues for a romantic stay.

Montpelier is a pretty safe city and there are no concerns, however the hotel (and the rooms) is accessible to anyone walking into the building as it is sharing office space in the same corridor as the hotel room.

We stayed in a double queen room. The bed was not comfortable (you could feel the coils) and new mattresses are in need. The heating unit was very noisy and the walls very thin which means you clearly hear noise from the adjoining rooms. The bathroom was very clean and hot water available at all times. The coffee machine in the room was convenient. There was no mini-fridge in our room - ice machines on the same floor. There is a small but clean and nicely appointed gym on the 2nd floor as well.

The restaurant on-site has a nice menu, however hotel staff (check-in, hotel, store) during our entire stay was not friendly nor helpful. Service was subpar, and we were not so politely told to go elsewhere for dinner as we did not have reservations. We understand it is a busy time of year, however we still were looking for food and we usually prefer a polite refusal to a <dah, what were you thinking> attitude. Overall the second floor of the hotel looked renovated with tasteful wallpaper, however the building is from the 1990's and it really is a 3 star hotel with thin walls and a noisy environment.

It is the best value for the location as it is the only one in town! Would go back again with no romantic expectations. Perfect for business / one night stay, great location, Montpelier is a very small and nice town and everything is accessible walking distance from this hotel.

“Great Hotel, Great Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

The Capitol is a great hotel with a central location and comfortable rooms. The staff is always attentive and the food at the hotel restaurant, JP Morgan, is top notch. I called for a room and they were booked. 20 minutes later the lady at the front desk called back and said they had just had a cancellation. Awesome customer service.

“A little more effort...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

I wasn't sure what to expect from my stay, as the Capitol Plaza really is the only hotel in town. I made a reservation the day before my arrival, then adjusted it the day of arrival to save a little money by selecting a different room type. ($40 more for a king rather than two queen beds? Really?)

When I checked in around 6pm, the front desk attendant seemed less-than-thrilled to be working. When I called attention to rate on my check-in card being incorrect, he hesitated- almost as if to say "do you want me to change it?". It seems his internal better judgement won out and he manually adjusted the rate. While all of this was going on, there was a hotel staff member looking to get help with some keys. I was pretty surprised that she kept interrupting the check-in process. Finally I think she realized it was a little inappropriate and stepped back until I was all set.

I had also brought a bottle of champagne with me, and asked if room service could bring up two glasses whenever they had a chance. I was promptly pointed in the direction of the restaurant to get my own glasses. I really enjoyed juggling my luggage, coat and 2 champagne glasses while fumbling for my room key.

The room was very nice and well-appointed. Everything was in good condition and I was surprised to see a Keurig coffee maker. I loved the Bath & Body Works bathroom amenities. In the morning, we realized the curtains were not very light-blocking....

As we were getting ready to leave by 11am (earliest check-out time ever...) we had housekeeping knock on our door not once, but twice. I understand they want to get a jump on cleaning the rooms, but maybe a little more communication between the front desk and housekeeping would help avoid the awkward "I'm in a towel, not quite ready to leave" conversation.

I work in a boutique hotel myself and was a little disappointed with the level of service from the staff I encountered on arrival and housekeeping. On the flip-side, the staff I spoke to on the phone while making and altering the reservation were very nice and the front desk associate at check-out was very nice.

As the only game in town, I think they may have gotten a little complacent on the guest service attitude.

Dear Joanne U, Thank you for staying with us and your review. I'm glad that you enjoyed your room and all the amenities. I wanted to clarify that the difference in price between the two styles of rooms is because the King bed rooms, we refer to them as Colonial Rooms, are a little more upscale and have 46" LED TVs, and Refridgerators, in addition to the Keurig Coffee Machines and amenities.
WE pride ourselves on providing the highest level of service, and are disappointed that the standard was not met with your visit. I want to assure you that we have spoken to the individuals involved and reemphasized the importance of good customer service.
On your next visit, please be sure to let me know if we can do anything to make your stay more enjoyable.
Thank you, Lilli Cain

“Very nice little town, friendly staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Montpelier is a very nice little town and this hotel fits right in with nice decorations up for thanksgiving, a fireplace and old-style decor.

The rooms are spacious and functional. The staff are very friendly and always say hello to you which is a nice touch. We couldn't get wifi to work on our laptop though which was annoying. Was quite noisy overnight as well.

All in all very comfy place to stay when in Montpelier.

Room Tip: Although it's nice to have a view of the main street and mountains, the road is surprisingly bus...
