Check LDS.org before coming for the hours. At least all summer, there are tours for free given by retired volunteers. Real interesting if you are interested in Utah history, architecture, LDS sites, or just like old buildings.
There are a couple of restaurants across Main Street to bookend your visit (the Coppermill) is good. But if your budget or time is limited, there is an awesome sandwich shop just north of the tabernacle on a side street to the east of the bank. It's called the Italian Place and is no more than 100 feet up the street.
The way I like to enjoy the grounds of this magnificent building us to get a sandwich and come back and lie down on the grass under one of the huge oaks. This us what summer is all about.
