This is one of the old one-story motor plaza motels from the 1940's/1950's with a significant refurb to bring it into the 21st century.
The good: The rooms are clean and average-sized for a Motel 6. Since it is a refurb rather than a purpose-built Motel 6 there is an actual bathtub with shower, not a shower stall like in the corporate purpose-built properties. Because it's a one-story hotel built as a motor plaza with outside-facing doors, you park at your hotel door and never have to haul luggage very far. The hotel was refurb'ed with typical under-window heating / cooling units that work well from what I can tell. The WiFi is free and requires no password to use it, but is entirely un-encrypted so if you're going to go online to your bank's web site, make sure you're using an encrypted ( https ) connection to do so.
The bad: There is no fence or anything else separating the backside of the hotel from the neighborhood behind, meaning that you see people walking around a few feet from your car who have a perfect right to be there. Granted Van Horn isn't the crime capital of the world, but with the number of tweakers breaking into anything and everything in rural areas to steal whatever they can steal to get money to buy more meth, think twice about leaving anything in your car if your room is on the backside of the hotel. Choo choo! Granted, everything in Van Horn is going to have train noise, the Texas & Pacific Railroad is what created Van Horn and the entire town is strung along the line. But when the motel was updated it was *not* updated with dual-pane windows or any kind of sound insulation to deal with the noise. Carry earplugs and try to get a room facing away from the tracks if you're a light sleeper -- the noise didn't wake me up (I spent five years living underneath an airport runway, it takes pretty much a major earthquake to wake me up), but I can see where it would be rather annoying to people accustomed to living in quiet locations.
All in all, it is what pretty much every Motel 6 is -- a clean cheap place to stop and sleep.
