“An older motor hotel w/mild refresh”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

This is one of the old one-story motor plaza motels from the 1940's/1950's with a significant refurb to bring it into the 21st century.

The good: The rooms are clean and average-sized for a Motel 6. Since it is a refurb rather than a purpose-built Motel 6 there is an actual bathtub with shower, not a shower stall like in the corporate purpose-built properties. Because it's a one-story hotel built as a motor plaza with outside-facing doors, you park at your hotel door and never have to haul luggage very far. The hotel was refurb'ed with typical under-window heating / cooling units that work well from what I can tell. The WiFi is free and requires no password to use it, but is entirely un-encrypted so if you're going to go online to your bank's web site, make sure you're using an encrypted ( https ) connection to do so.

The bad: There is no fence or anything else separating the backside of the hotel from the neighborhood behind, meaning that you see people walking around a few feet from your car who have a perfect right to be there. Granted Van Horn isn't the crime capital of the world, but with the number of tweakers breaking into anything and everything in rural areas to steal whatever they can steal to get money to buy more meth, think twice about leaving anything in your car if your room is on the backside of the hotel. Choo choo! Granted, everything in Van Horn is going to have train noise, the Texas & Pacific Railroad is what created Van Horn and the entire town is strung along the line. But when the motel was updated it was *not* updated with dual-pane windows or any kind of sound insulation to deal with the noise. Carry earplugs and try to get a room facing away from the tracks if you're a light sleeper -- the noise didn't wake me up (I spent five years living underneath an airport runway, it takes pretty much a major earthquake to wake me up), but I can see where it would be rather annoying to people accustomed to living in quiet locations.

All in all, it is what pretty much every Motel 6 is -- a clean cheap place to stop and sleep.

“About what you'd expect from a Motel 6 in Van Horn, TX”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2011

My husband, two kids (ages 4 and 5), and I needed a place to stop overnight on a road trip from Austin to San Diego. It's a Motel 6 in the middle of nowhere, I wasn't expecting much and this place met my expectations. The beds weren't comfy, the shower didn't drain, the hot water and cold water were opposite positions, and the room was very small, dated and well used. That said, it was inexpensive, smelled of cleaning products (which is good), the staff was nice, and there was the added bonus of it having a refrigerator and microwave.

“Service above & beyond!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

We needed a quick overnight stop on a driving trip across the Southwest & picked Motel 6. It's about what you would expect from a Motel 6--no amenities; property was a little tired & in need of refurbishment. But the front desk staff was very friendly & helpful when we checked in. The real reward came the next morning. Several hours after we left, my husband realized that his phone had fallen out of his pocket when he was loading the car. We called, expecting nothing. But wonder of wonders, the phone had been found & turned in. They mailed it back to us & it arrived a few days later. Excellent work, Debbie of Motel 6!

“Save a few dollars and stay here!”

Ok, ....so you need to bring your own hair dryer, shampoo and conditioner. I normally bring these itmes anyway. For the price, I think $43 tax included this place is very worth it. All the other places were $79 to $120 and there were some dumps at higher prices. Motel 6 was clean, refurbished, new beds, shower only, hardwood floors, new bedspreads......The pictures when i looked up on*line are old pictures. We bought our breakfest down the street at sonic one day and subway the next. So we spent approx $50 a day for hotel and breakfest. The other hotels that offer breakfest ar $89 and up. Save yourself some money and stay at the Motel 6 while the furnishings are still new!

“Poor for even a Motel 6”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2011

I stayed one night in Van Horn's Motel 6. It's right by train tracks: I'm a sound sleeper, but the train woke me up twice during the night. Blanket on bed was scimpy; there was no fitted sheet on the bed: the bottom sheet was a torn flat sheet. Smell in room (cleaning solution? mold?) was very strong. Cable TV connection was so bad that I couldn't see the weather map on The Weather Channel. I stay at Motel 6's because I travel with a small pet and with Motel 6 I avoid hassles, but I would avoid this Motel 6 in the future. One good thing: front desk clerk was very friendly.
