We enjoyed our off-season stay at the Sandpiper Condominiums and thought it was very reasonably priced. I noticed, however, that next year's prices are considerably higher.
Here's what we loved:
Location--Nice, quiet stretch of the beach, not too far to drive to N Padre or Port A restaurants and jetty action. Very easy-to-find location.
Condo facilities--Staff very friendly and helpful. Being right on the beach was great. Seems a lot of thought went into providing everything you’d need and want: The pool and hot tub (but it was rarely actually hot) were big, nice, and clean. You could check out equipment for shuffleboard, table tennis, and tennis. Pool towels were provided. Beach chairs and outdoor showers were provided. Inside were nice seating areas, a 24-hour coffee bar, and luggage and grocery carts. We enjoyed the propane grills and outdoor seating on sun deck. Also enjoyed the ice cream social organized by the residents. What a fun idea.
Our condo itself (208)--It was VERY nice to be able to preview online all of the available units. We had a nice view of the ocean over the dune from our balcony. (Any lower and you’d see only the dune. Higher would get better ocean views, but also be less quick to the first-floor boardwalk to the beach.) All kinds of dishes, utensils, appliances, dish towels, hot pads, trash bags, dishwasher detergent, etc., etc.—really everything we could want. Beds and linens were nice and comfortable; HOWEVER the sleeper couch was absolutely unusable as a bed. There was plenty of comfortable seating in the living room and dining area. There was also wireless that we enjoyed and three TVs, which we didn’t use. Linen exchange and trash removal service came by about 9am, and there were trash chutes on every other floor if you wanted to get rid of say, seafood garbage, immediately after dinner.
We were frustrated with:
Condition of the sleeper sofa--Condo said it slept six, and we saw online that there was a king and two twins, so we knew two of us were going to be on a sleeper sofa. Sleeper sofas are rarely as comfortable as real beds, but since it was offered as a bed for two people, we thought it would be okay for kids for a couple of nights. We were wrong. This one was THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE sleeper sofa we’ve ever experienced. You could feel every single 4-inch coil in the mattress. We put two kids there, and they begged to sleep on the floor the next night. I wouldn’t subject anyone to that mattress for a single night much less an extended stay. It felt like false advertising to say the condo accommodated six.
The "hot" tub--The hot tub was almost never working (or is it that they kept it turned to a tepid temp except when people complained)? Could be because it was the off season and they wanted to save on the utility bill.
Overall, I felt this was a thoughtfully equipped facility in a great location for our interests. Prices are high for in season, but the quality is very good, so no worries about the Sandpiper meeting your expectations. We checked out some other places right on the beach and felt they looked run down and were no differently priced.
