“Good for the price, but needs a lot of work...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 May 2012 NEW

For the price, it is a good hotel. I spent with my wife and 1 year old baby a few good days there. But the Hotel needs to improve in several areas before I decide to come back or recommend this to my friends.

Some of the key areas that need improvement

a) Dirty pools
I even saw a guest cleaning one of the pools by herself. The pools need to be cleaned a couple of times per day or so. It doesn't look like there is staff from the hotel taking care of this during the day.

b) Lack of variety and professionalism in the Restaruant' menu.
They are missing a golden opportunity here. there are no good restaurants on a 7 mile radius. And yet, the restaurant's menu is poor, the food is bland, the staff is undertrained, etc. It is not even about the cost (costs are OK), it is about the quality. The resource should do your best to make sure guest want to stay at the resourt at any time, correct?

c) Lack of facilities for small kids (no playgrounds, no nursery, no pool for kids, etc)

d) Lack of organization:
On 05/24/12 there was going to be an event at the Hotel. Some members of the staff told us it was a buffet, then others told us it was just music, then other told us there was a steak differ at the restaurant, and finally somebody else told us it was a boiled seafood festival. ? Good thing we already have plans and didn't care, but this kind of miscommunication and disorganization is unacceptable from a 'resort'.

e) This is not a 'luxury' resort. That is ok because the price we paid was acceptable, but don't go thinking that this is a top-notch luxury resort.

“Awesome stay”

Check in was smooth, and easy. The condo was very updated, with all the amenities of home. The beds were very comfortable and ac was good and cold! Great view of the pool and the ocean. Ate at the restaurant one night and it was reasonably priced and good food for the price, but would expect more options and better quality with the overall caliber of the resort. The grounds were beautiful and very well kept. Staff were observed working all day, every day of our three day stay. We will definately return!

“Outstanding staff, incredible pool, condo rode hard too many times...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2012 NEW

This was our first visit to Port Royal as well as our first trip to the beach with our 4-year-old twins, so we were looking for a low key, yet memorable experience. Property management has clearly made a dedicated commitment to staff training and it definitely showed. From the security guy at the gate (who has a voice made for radio) to the front desk folks, to even the new guy emptying trash cans by the elevators, they all went out of their way to be welcoming, patient, gracious, and friendly beyond belief. They clearly know who funds their paychecks and made every effort in every situation to make a visitor's experience something exceptional.

The pool complex is in a class beyond comparison anywhere else on South Padre. It is more along the lines of what you'd find at the 4-5 star resorts in the Cancun area. The three distinct pools separated by waterfall ledges gave space to all ages without crowding them uncomfortably together. Definitely the most attractive element of the facilities. With tons of seaweed on the beath and rough/dirty waves, the pool was a big hit with the twins. Just a hint if you're looking for a driving experience to the beach (so's to carry more 'stuff'), load up and turn left out of Port Royal going towards Corpus Christi. Drive a mile or two and turn left on Access Road 2 which will take you to the free parking area on the beach between markers 98 and 103...that will take you away from most of the crowds nearer the resorts.

Then there was the condo we stayed in itself, which showed its wear in that it had definitely been rode hard and put up wet a few times too many. Comfortable and clean with a great, quiet partial Gulf view location, but...the bathroom fixtures and cabinetry were in sorrowful need of an update, the exterior door to the balcony either barely opened or couldn't be closed, the ice maker didn't work (but was immediately fixed by Engineering), and the oven door handle fell off in my hands (which I bolted back on myself).

Nice to have free wireless, but it's performance was spotty at best...the Internet gateway kept dropping out and average bandwidth (1Mbps) for anything more than simple web browsing was non-existent. We were there in the middle of the week, not crowded at all, so can't imagine what it would be like with lots of people trying to connect...

All in all, our visit met our expectations...the only drawback was the worn condo condition, but kudos, KUDOS to the most excellent Port Royal staff!

“not just one problem, but several.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2012

not just one problem, but several.
1. i called the day of our arrival to see about early check in. the staff assured me a check in at 1:30pm wouldn't be a problem. we arrived at 1:30 and had to wait an hour to be checked in because our rooms were still not ready, regardless of the phone call made 1 1/2 hours before.
2. upon check in we were required to pay a pet fee of $100 - which is outrageous for a 2 night weekend and a 5 lb. poodle. i can understand a pet deposit, but a pet fee is ridiculous - especially for this amount. on top of resort fees, it feels as though your company is nickel and diming customers and not providing service or amenities to make up for these 'fees'.
3. the beds were the most unconfortable beds we have ever slept in (both rooms). the funiture was extreamly out dated and also uncomfortable.
4. we had vouchers for the resteraunt for two adults and two kids. we made reservations for 8 people for 7:30pm on the second night. i have worked in the food industry for 12 years, and to me there was no management. the staff didnt know the menu, which was small to begin with. we ordered drinks and appetizers to start. it took about 15 minutes to get water and sodas. then a few minutes later the waiter told us two of the appetizers we had ordered were out. with the proper management and training, the staff should know what is on hand and what is not.
5. then there were the entrees...we all ordered and about 20 minutes later. a different waiter came out and told us three of the entrees that were ordered were out. so after making another selection we waited again. finally the food came out. all 4 orders that were steaks were over cooked. my sister, after having to select another entree after our original order because the waiter didn't know they were out of filets, got an entree she didnt even order due to the waiter not writing down her second order. the waiter tried to convince her to eat it anyway. she refused because she cant eat bell peppers, but thats beside the point, she didn't order it. the waiter took her order a third time, still not writing it down, and said he will make it 'to go' since the rest of use were already eating. 15 minutes later she got her food 'to go'. when we got back to the room, she opened the 'to go' tray to find out the entree was still not what she ordered. the cooks should know the difference between blackend and lemon sauteed shrimp,so she ended up not eating.
very, very, disappointing!!! the screwups became comical. probably the worst dining experience all of us have had.

Lance,

Thank you for your response. I sincerely apologize for the unfortunate experience you had while staying here at Port Royal. Please know that I have addressed these issues with our management team and we're taking the necessary steps to remedy the problems that you've informed us about.

Please know that our restaurant is going under a huge transition period. This past Sunday, the restaurant has temporarily closed for major renovations both in decor and staff training - and your experience during dinner was directly affected by the plans to close the next day. I'm working closely working with the restaurant management and staff to investigate your experience and will follow up with you shortly.

Thanks again,

Stephan Noack
