“Adequate but no soul”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

My husband and I stayed for one night at the Greshornish Hotel as part of a touring holiday around Scotland earlier this summer. The website and photos online paint a picture of a stylish & cosy hotel and the prices echo this, we were looking forward to checking into somewhere we had imagined would be a little bit special but unfortunately we were quickly disappointed. On the whole, this is a decent, solid guest house but seems to be somewhere (awkwardly) inbetween a guest house and hotel. The room was fine but the TV had terrible reception (not a huge issue but for the price you pay you would expect a fully functioning TV!) there also seemed to be far too many little notes around the house reading "don't do this" "wipe your feet" - which made the welcome feel less than warm. Dinner was fine (there isn't really anywhere else in the area to go) but most dishes on the menu seemed to incur supplementary costs which seemed a little out of place for a family run hotel. I would not revisit although the surrounding scenery is beautiful....

We're very sorry to hear that your night here was a disappointment to you, and that you felt your welcome was tempered by the reminder note asking guests to leave muddy boots at the bottom of the stairs. You might be surprised at how many people find themselves embarrassed by having left mud all the way up the stairs!
TV reception is indeed an issue, as we make clear on our website. Here on Skye, we are in the throes of digital switchover, and the aerial engineers have been booked (since February) to come this month to resolve reception issues. We hope therefore to find the best practical solution as soon as we know the full impact of the changes.
I am afraid it is inevitable that some dishes, like fillet steak, lobster, langoustines and scallops carry supplements if prices for the main table d'hote menu are to be kept down. We do try to ensure that there is always a fair degree of choice available for those who do not wish to pay additional supplements. Unfortunately the expensive items almost by definition will seem to be more attractive - but it would be a pity not to offer them!!

“Nice but not amazing as suggested in some reviews”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

Stayed at Greshornish for a night. Due to last minute booking we were offered one of the the attic rooms. Were told in advance it was small so that was fine. However, on arrival we found, even for a small room, the accomodation to be far from 4 star. The bath had no shower attachment-we had to wash our hair in the sink. However the meal was lovely and we were attended to well. Hosts were nice and friendly. All in all we enjoyed our overnight but were not blown away. Pricey too. Not sure if we would come back

Thank you for your comments about being well attended to during your stay here - and I am sorry that when we were contacted in the morning there was no other room to offer you. As you will know, we were very hesitant about offering you that particular room as it is usually only made available to youngsters whose parents are also staying. Had we realised that the hairwash hose had been inadvertently put away in the housekeeper's cupboard, your hair-washing would have been less uncomfortable - we are so sorry.

“Not what we were expecting...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2010

We first arrived at the hotel with an early check in booking.
However the owner/manager wasn't expecting us even though we had spoken on the telephone to arrange a time.
Check in is usually around 4PM, however we arrived at 2PM as arranged.

After check in we were shown to our room, we booked a large double at the front of the hotel.
The room was nice enough clean and fresh, however it lacked the old country house charm we were expecting.

After check-in we were offered refreshments which was greatly appreciated, however they claimed the baking was home made and it wasn't.

Dinner service is at 7.30, this is located in the dining room which we felt didn't keep within the house's theme as it was a newly extended room.
The food was satisfactory, we enjoyed the meal a few things could have been improved but nothing to majorly complain about.

Neil and his wife were very friendly, however sometimes to friendly, we sat down for coffee and it felt like we couldn't have our own conversation as we were interrupted frequently.

Overall we left the hotel feeling satisfied not overly rejoiced but however satisfied.

Next time we vist the Isle of Skye we do plan to stay in a different hotel.

The rates for the kind of service you receive is over priced in our opinion.
Also we could only receive a dial up internet connection in our room.

We hope our review was helpful.

Thank You

We were saddened to read that your stay did not match your expectations, and that you found our service intrusive. I am also sorry that we gave the impression that we were not expecting you when you arrived; time must have flown by that morning!
As a matter of principle, everything is freshly prepared in our own kitchens and we use as much local produce as we possibly can; illness, or other eventuality, can exceptionally make it necessary to use the 'home made' services of others for tea.
Our current dining room was originally the Victorian kitchen, built around 1850; the conservatory is the only recent addition, built in part to provide better access for guests.
We are aware of shortcomings (TV reception & broadband included) and continue to work on a programme which we feel will help this old house and its furnishings better to reflect its historic character. We hope that you will return one day to see how we are getting on.

“lovely stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2010

Just spent a lovely couple of days here. Our room, Islay, was beautiful. Large, well furnished, clean & bright, with a comfortable bed & nice bathroom. The owners were extremely accommodating & helpful. The food is tasty, using good local produce & the menu changes daily. The house offers wonderful views & the grounds, a work in progress, are pretty & peaceful. All in all a super spot for a short break.

“Trading on an old good name me thinks!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2009

I was excited to arrive in this well reviewed hotel but bitterly disappointed. It lacked a friendly face and the dining room was so tiny and not in keeping with the property. It was cold, tasteless and the snooker room should have been the dining room. The property is in serious need of a renovation and needs major money spent on it. The owners lack the charm of the Highland hospitality and really don't have the X FActor with guests. The TV was non existant and although you do not go to Skye to watch TV it is comforting if you have it in the room to be able to watch it. Old fashioned and unworkable although I think the owners have Skye in their pad. I was sadly very disappointed but the breakfast was delicious. The chef needs to stir his oatmeal so that the lumps disappear.
