Set in a stunning location, way of the beaten tourist track, Greshornish House was the setting for a short break for my wife and I. We were looking for somewhere with peace and quiet and with a touch of luxury and certainly found it at Greshornish House.

The adventure begins as you turn down the track that takes you a couple of miles off the main road along the Greshornish Peninsular. The scenery just gets better and better and by way of a surprise you cant see Greshornish House until the very last minute as you arrive at the front of the house. You are greeted by the visage of a charming country house in a stunning location with views across the water to the Trotternish Peninsular.

We were warmly greeted by our hosts (the owners) Neil and Rosemary. Registration was swift and our bags were taken to our room (Islay). This was a charming and well appointed room with 4 poster bed and a very spacious en-suite bathroom with luxurious toiletries and heaps of fluffy white towels awaiting us. There was a comfortable sofa, a couple of easy chairs and seats for the dressing table and a large wardrobe. The television was freeview digital and worked perfectly. Not that we intended spending any time watching it, there was the lovely views to enjoy.

We were then invited to take tea in the light and airy conservatory. Our afternoon tea consisted of Earl Grey and a choice of sumptuous home made cakes. I can definitely recommend the fruit cake!

The hotel (this seems such a 'cold' term as being at Greshorninsh is more like staying with friends at their lovely country house) was fully booked and along with most of the guests we dined in.

Our candlelit diner was excellent. The food was cooked to perfection and was very well presented without being over 'arty'. Service was friendly and efficient. We both had the steak (rare) and it was very good indeed, another recommendation there then. I had been considering having the cheese board as it sounded very good, but my 4 courses filled me up and to my slight disappointment had no room for any more food!

Afterwards we took tea in the drawing room in front of a roaring log fire - excellent with squishy sofas and chairs and very charming. My wife commented that it was like being in an Agatha Christie film without the murders!

We retired to our room and had a great night's sleep in the comfortable 4 poster bed.

Breakfast was in the conservatory and after our cereals we opted for the full cooked breakfast with scrambled eggs. It was a good choice indeed. Well cooked and the scrambled eggs were delicious, more Earl Grey tea and toast to go with it. It certainly was a good start to the day.

We spent the day exploring the island and dined at the Stein Inn (recommended as well). We returned back to Greshornish House tired and after a nightcap retired to our room to relax and read for a while before climbing into the four poster bed for another great night sleep.

The peace and tranquility at Greshornish House seems to drain the stress out of its guests helped by the warm and friendly attentiveness of your hosts and their staff.

We awoke after another good nights sleep to another good breakfast before reluctantly saying our good byes and leaving this haven of tranquility and luxury.

Would we go there again - you bet we will. Would we recommend it to others, we certainly will.

Value for money - yes. If you want cheap and cheerful basic accommodation then go to one of the many B&Bs on Skye. If you want an homogenous, corporate hotel with rooms that could be in any of their hotels in any country in the world and a night porter and 24 hour room service then go to a 'chain' hotel off the M25.

If you want a bit of luxury and peace and quiet in a homely and individual setting with hosts who really care about making you enjoy your stay then Greshornish House is for you.

I did read some of the rather negative reviews on this website about Greshornish House and I have no idea what the reviewers agenda was or indeed how they can be talking about the same place. Take no notice of them, you will not be disappointed, Greshornish House does exactly as it says on the tin (well on their website anyway but you get my drift). To quote said website:

“One of the Isle of Skye’s very best-kept secrets”, this historic country house is a unique and delightful combination of luxury bed-and-breakfast accommodation serving delicious evening meals, relaxing intimate retreat and comfortable family home now belonging to Neil and Rosemary Colquhoun."

My partner and I stayed at Greshornish over the easter break and we were expecting a stylish, cosy country hotel. However, what we experienced was far from this - we felt like unwanted guests in their home. The first night we had dinner in the hotel and instead of being asked which time would suit us best we were told to come down at 8pm - dutifully we did and were ushered into the dining room without even being allowed to finish our drinks at the bar. The dining room lacked any sort of atmosphere and we found ourselves (along with all the other guests there that night) having to whisper - far from what you would expect when the meal came to over £100.
We started the day on Saturday with open minds but these quickly disappeared - we were actually told off by one of the propietors for mistakingly taking our key with us in the afternoon which upset me and made us feel very uncomfortable. After the disappointment with dinner the previous night we chose to eat out -this apparently caused them a huge imposition as they had to stay up and let us back in (we got back at 11pm). We even got the restaurant to call our hotel to let them know we had left, at the proprietors request. Check-out was an equally big imposition as the rest of our stay - with a daunting 13 hour drive back to london we wanted to leave at 8am - we were told, begrudgingly the night before, they would have to get up early for us! The place is too regimental for a hotel and if they dont want to wake up early/stay up later they should employ a receptionist. The tv in our room didnt work atall (not that that caused a huge problem) but for the price of the room you expect everything to function properly. All in all its too expensive for what it is and not atall like the website portrays. Had they portrayed a bed and breakfast run by husband and wife this is what we would have expected, not a fine-dining boutique hotel which it most certainly is not.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for my birthday. Our room was delightful with a four poster bed and beautiful views, full of old charm and character. With a map and guidance from our hosts Neil and Rosemary we set off for a long walk out to Greshornish Point before dinner, the surrounding scenery was stunning and should not be missed. Dinner, particularly our starters was delicious and coffee and a post dinner game of snooker in the drawing room rounded off the evening nicely. For an added cost my boyfriend pre ordered a birthday cake which was beautifully done. What Greshornish House Hotel lacks in mod cons and contemporary style it makes up for in old fashioned charm, country quirks and a warm, homely atmosphere.

We stayed here a few monthhs ago and I find it hard to beleive some of the negative comments posted here. We have stayed several times before and have always found the hotel a real treat. The rooms are beutifully decorated and the food is to be compared to the best Skye has to offer. We will definately return again!
