“Totally ignore bad reviews! A Great Hotel!”

I've just got back from a weeks stay at the columbus aparthotel (11th-18th September). I'm 22 and my other half is 24. i dont normally write reviews but this hotel has been slated so much, so i feel i need to write about the good!
Well, what can i say! we have both agreed that this is the best holiday that we've ever had abroad!
With reading all the bad reviews i was seriously thinking we'd made a mistake by booking this hotel, but took a chance with it.
I'm probably the fussiest eater you would ever meet - but we went all inclusive purely for the drinks, and if the food was pants we would then also have the choice to eat out if needed.
As i've said, im a fussy eater but there was something there that i ate every day! There was a lot of meats, pastas, fruit, salads, pizzas, and wasnt always just chips that were available.
We only ate out once - which was at the Aberdeen Steak house across the road (Very nice! and great value for money!)
We mainly stayed at the hotel until 11pm when they stopped serving all inclusive drinks, and then went out onto the strip a couple of nights.
pub / club workers touting for business was the most annoying part of going upto the strip - Everyones on commision so they all try and get you in their pubs / clubs.
The nights that we went to bed earlier the noise wasnt too bad - our room was on the 3rd floor and next to the main flight of stairs, so we was bound to hear noise of people coming back to the hotel in the early hours of the morning (not to forget that you're in Playa De Las Americas!) But the hotel is 5mins walk from Veronicas etc, so far enough away to not hear the hussle and bussle but close enough to venture out.
Entertainment at the hotel wasnt the best. it was entertainment very much for the children (and at the time of year that we've been majority of the kids were back at school) but it was better than no entertainment at all!
The hotel is currently being refurbished; main reception, bar, swimming pools and a few of the rooms in the 2nd block have already been completed, but around 40 rooms are out of action whilst being completed. We was informed of this before we completed booking, and with the amount of work that they're doing, we didnt find them noisy!
Our room had the maid visit everyday. Beds made, clean towels every couple of days.. Although they didnt tend to sweep the floors! After having a shower i found i needed to put shoes on straight away to avoid dirty feet.
ideal location for beaches, shops and nightlife if you're interested in going out.The Anchor (just across the road) is ideal for an quieter evening out.
Sunbeds - We never had to fight fun a sun lounger. Most mornings we went down for breakfast, and then went to the pool area (some mornings as late as 10.30am) and sunbeds were always available.

Columbus is a 3* Hotel - if you've got high expectations then book a hotel thats a 5*

i really couldnt fault the hotel - And will most probably be returning again next year.
ideal for young couples, families with young and older children, and even the older generation!
Columbus gets a big thumbs up from me! Ignore the bad reviews!

“Really not that bad at all!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2010

After reading the reviews on here I was not looking forward to our summer holiday at all and even went back to the travel agents and tried to changed our accomodation, however we have just got back from a two week stay at the columbus and we had a really nice holiday and the hotel didnt spoil it at all.
My main concern was the young groups who would be staying there, I expected it to be really rowdy around the pool throught the day and unbearable at night to sleep but although they were a lot of young ones there, there were lots of families and older people too! There were no problems round the pool, all to be heard was the kids playing and night times were not that bad either. Out of two weeks we were only woken up once by noise and it stopped very quickly, If my little girl woke throught the night I could here people coming in but the Columbus is 5 mins from veronicas so it has to be expected and it didnt spoil our holiday.
Another concern was the hotel itself and its clenliness but the hotel is being refurbished and it is really modern with brand new reception, bar, disco room an pools. Although our room hadnt been done yet it was really clean and bright. The maid came in every day and left clean towels and sheets were changed every two days. We found the staff all really friendly especially with the kids & they apreciated when they were saying hello and thank you in spanish, I think those who have said they are very rude must have been rude to them in the first place!!. We had some really nice food, there was fresh salad, pasta, fish and fresh pizza been made in front of you. There was also lots of different meat dishes on offer one being cooked in front of you. If you stay all inclusive and arrive in the evening they bring you a plate with meats and cheese and bread and also water & fruit. The entertainmaent on an evening was fine and we saw some good shows and the only show to be repeated in the two weeks was the parot show which the kids enjoy anyway.
I wouldnt let these reviews put you off staying at the Columbus it's standard spanish 3 star and think people expecting luxury on holiday should book a 5 star hotel in the first place!!
It will be even better once the rooms have been modernised and I would go back with my family.

“Good as anywhere i've stayed previously!”

Nice hotel, had no issues with anything, stayed self catering although only used the fridge to keep the beers cool. Never heard any complaints about anything from anyone whilst i was there. Plenty of sunbeds both by the two main pools and also at the small one round the back. I would stay there again should I ever go back to Tenerife as it is a great location for the Veronicas and Starcos strips but far enough away so you didn't hear it. Couple of nice bars in the area, The anchor suitable for families at night time and La Boca just down the road did good food at very reasonable prices (avoid Aberdeen Steak Houses they possibly do the worst food I have ever tasted, i'd liken it to school dinners of the 80's).

There is a Spar attached to the hotel which is handy.

Never had a problem with the security guard once, unpleasant chap but never said anything to anyone whislt i was there.

A must for Tenerife is to visit Siam water park, even for the bigger kids! Don't bother with the bus on the way up as its only 4 Euro in a taxi just get bus number one back!

Only slight complaint is the annoying woman trying to get people to play the activites (she said woo hoo very loudly, not good when trying to chillax, and people staying at the hotel thought this was a good thing to mimic for the duration of their stay, cockneys for you though, one drink that isn't shandy and there all over the place)

“YUCK”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

I went to this hotel with very low expectations as i knew it wasn't going to be 5 star luxury. Me my dad and my brother got into our room it was filthy! so much so that you would have black feet from walking around in your own apartment. I am a travel agent and i definately would not reccomend anyone to this hotel . It wouldn't be so bad if it was clean but it is dirty and the best word to describe it is YUCK!
