Hotel Le Sirius in Avoriaz was booked by us through a company on the Internet called Planigo. It was advertised as 2-star plus accommodation as we were unable to book our preferred 3-star accommodation, but were assured by Planigo that this would be of an equivalent standard. The five of us, having travelled throughout the day from Surrey, by car, arrived after midnight at the Hotel, to be greeted by a bone-shaking ride to the back entrance of the Hotel and taken in via the overflowing rubbish bins and eventually handed the key to our 12th floor "broom-cupboard" by a young lad with a bottle of beer, while eyed up by a guard with a rotweiler. Not a good start.
This "apartment" was not big enough for two people, let alone five. We had one blanket provided for all of us, no heating and snow coming in the front-door! There was fungus growing down the bedroom and hall walls, lavatory paper stuck to the bathroom floor, cigarette ends on the sofa and cigarette burns and blood stains on the sofa beds and pillows (see photos), to name but a few things. It would have been impossible for five people to live in this apartment with all our ski gear and skis and this cost in excess of 1,000 Euros for the week. I can only say that I am appalled by the standard of this place and despite repeated attempts to get a response from Planigo, the French Tourist Office and the French Embassy in the UK, we have heard nothing and after repeated phone calls while in Avoriaz, no one would take any responsibility for the situation. Naturally, there has been no mention of compensation and we left early the next morning after sleeping for a couple of hours in our full ski jackets as it was so cold. Fortunately, we were able to find superior accommodation at a much more reasonable price in Morzine, but this holiday cost us almost twice as much as it should have done and led to a dreadful start to what should have been a really enjoyable skiing holiday. The total lack of interest and concern by the tour company, Planigo, and the Hotel Le Sirius staff at the situation, who have been happy to take my money, but have certainly not fulfilled their part of the contract, is, I consider, appalling and I would certainly not recommend anyone to use this set-up.
