“Gorgeous! What a drive!”

Scenic, rustic, beautiful, just a few words to describe the Willow City Loop.

Only 10-15 minutes up HWY 16 from Fredericksburg, this drive is a must see if you are in the area from March 1-Memorial Day. The drive down IH-10 to get to Fredericksburg was memorable. My wife and I saw MILES of bluebonnets, sunflowers, and indian paintbrush along the median and in the hills.

This was nothing compared to the beauty that awaited us. Here you will find fields upon fields, acres upon acres of wildflowers, some stretching (LITERALLY!) as far as the eye can see. There is also a nice little creek that runs through the area that showcases some nice little waterfalls along the granite. There's also a breathtaking curve that reminded me of some areas of Colorado where you drive along and the ground drops away to reveal a valley. This valley contained more of nature's beauty that made us stop the car.

Shutterbugs, professional photographers, families on a drive, you will all love this wonderful drive. Another plus is, YOU decide how long it lasts. My wife and I stayed for about an hour, but could have stayed longer or left sooner if we chose.

Keep in mind, people live out there. DO NOT drive down the private driveways and stay on the Loop.

“THE LOOP IS GOOD, KNOT ON THE LOOP IS BRILLIANT!”

This would be a beautiful drive if you could time it for when the blue bonnets are out, unfortunately, due to the drout, we did not see them, but it was still a nice scenic drive. This is close to Ferdeicksburg and gets you out into the real countryside. We stopped at a bar/restaurant called "Knot on the Loop" which is in a lovely setting way out on its own amidst the wild flowers and fields. The lady in there is chatty and very welcoming and everyone takes their cameras into the restrooms to read the quaint signs! If you want a pleasant drive, finished off by good company, stop by for a burger and a chat.

“Knot in the Loop Saloon, the Best Bar in Texas”

I went on a road trip last year to see the Willow City Loop, as I have heard how beautiful it is and came across the Knot in the Loop Saloon. As soon as I walked in I felt like I had been taken back to the Wild West Days. The atmosphere is unbelievable. You immediately feel at home the minute you walk in. I spent the better part of the afternoon just walking around and looking at every single thing in there, from the old time piano to the antique items on the ceiling. Robin and Wayne, the owners, were there when I arrived and both immediately struck me as two very down to earth people. We struck up a conversation and I felt like I had known them forever. I ordered a burger and fries and I have to tell you, that was probably the best burger I have ever eaten. Then Robin showed me how all the dollar bills on the ceiling got there when I added mine. When it was time to leave I actually felt I had found the coolest bar in Texas. The next time I go to Texas I will make sure to visit Wayne and Robin again.

“Bluebonnets and Beer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2005

We drove the Willow City Loop in May of 2005 to check out what everybody says about the scenic wildflowers. This drive has been consistantly rated one of the top ten drives in Texas. Well now I know why. It was absolutely beautiful, miles of flowers of every variety, abundant wildlife, and scenic vistas. Now some things to note before you go. The Loop is a small road thru privatly owned property, and the land owners are serious when they say no trespassing. During the height of the flower season (mid April-May), it can be very congested with bicycles, motorcycles and cars. I recommend going at almost sundown, its not crowded and the deer, turkeys and wild hogs are out in full swing. There are no facilities on the Loop but we found a charming place called Knot in the Loop Saloon on Ranch Road 1323, just off the Loop with friendly owners who provide the only public restrooms in Willow City. It has a family atmosphere and children are welcome with parents and they serve ice cold beer as well as sodas, juice and gatorade, Its is a favorite stop for the cyclists to rest and rehydrate. It also has large parking areas for people who wish to park and ride the Loop on bicycles. The only other place is Harrys and we were told we would have to purchase something to use the restrooms. That was the only downer of the entire visit, I strongly recommend this drive.
