“Older Motel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

I spend a great deal of time in hotels and I must admit this was a pleasant surprise. One of the things that I like is the main floor rooms all have their own entrance, and parking making unloading a snap. The staff were great, and breakfast was normal fair for a motel. Their is a family style resturaunt next door that has average food, may want to find a better place in town. Gas station across the street, and easy access to the freeway.

“Good for overnight stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

First impression when we pulled up was that the hotel looked a bit grim - it is very dark, not the golden pine colour in the photos. However, inside it is fine, a typical chain hotel style. Our room was very spacious and well furnished, including a fridge. Wi-fi worked well in the room. Didn't get a chance to try the hot tub, just off the reception area. Staff very pleasant. The hotel is on 2 floors, no lift (elevator). Breakfast nothing special, but adequate.
The family restaurant next door was closed for renovations, but we had a very nice meal at the Bay Leaf Cafe, about 10 minutes walk away. (Though they did say they would be closed next week, but I don't know if that was just for the week or for the season - give them a ring if planning to go there).

Room Tip: If you have heavy bags, ask for ground floor room - no lift.

“surprisingly good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

We stayed one night. The hotel was a pleasant surprise, as was Spearfish. Location is convenient to old downtown or the university. Staff was very accomodating and polite. Room was very large and clean. Beds were comfortable. The only drawback was no elevator, so suitcases are a pain getting upstairs. However the staff is quick to offer assistance. breakfast was the usual waffles and cereal with fresh apples and bananas. Plenty for us.

“Refrigerator on the Floor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

This is the first time I have seen the small refrigerator sitting directly on the floor. I'm sorry but the door will not open and close properly this way; and it is way too far down for middle-agers to reach safely. Also, it was unplugged when we got there. I didn't know if it was not operable or what. I finally found a place to plug it in, but was a very daunting task for someone with a bad back. I really make use of the frig and microwave at my hotels, so this is very important to me.

Next, the remote all but didn't work. It took a good 5 or 6 seconds to change each channel if you held it exactly right. This also is very important to me, and is the major reason I will not be back. It is impossible to have a comfortable stay when things don't work right.

All the rest is plenty good enough. The room was clean. We loved the fact that it was accessible from the outside, as husband is a smoker and must make frequent trips out there. It was quiet. The desk clerk was a very competent no-nonsense person. I'd hire her.

It was also great that there was a restaurant right next door, as we hate to do any more driving at the end of a long day. We had a good meal there and were stuffed, so we went for a walk around the neighborhood. That was a very pleasant and quiet experience. It felt very safe. We liked the town.

Can't speak for the breakfast, as I had leftovers from my supper. I would definitely stay here again if they would do something about the frig and tv.
