“Reservations Honored”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

Their home page lists the FAX #. I found it though 605) 574-2749 and called. The person who took my reservation was polite but short. When we arrived at 12:30 it was the height of the lunch hour and the hostess was snippy. She told us to wait that our table wasn't ready. It took about 10 minutes (restroom break time).
Everything went smoothly once we were sitted and the lunch (sandwiches, soup amd salads ordered by my group) were all excellent.
If you are thinking of eating here for dinner-REMEMBER there is only one thing on the menu...STEAK!

“Awesome lunch!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2009

We arrived a little after 11:00 AM and the place quickly filled up. We all had different sandwiches and we all agreed the ones we had were very good. Make sure you save room for dessert!!! When the dessert menu is about as long as the lunch menu, you know you're in for a real treat and we were not disappointed. The prices for the sandwiches and desserts were very reasonable considering their excellent quality.

“Awesome food, but need to eat there twice one lunch and one dinner!!”

A local favorite...

I love this place, the lunch menu has a German base while the dinner is very simple (large or small filet served with a 1/4 head of lettuce).

But the deserts are the best!! I always come here for a meal when I get a chance to come back to the Black Hills.

I love the German Plate with two kinds of Bratwurst and Spaetzle for lunch, and the desert is fair game! You can't go wrong.

(But warning, they do not accept credit cards but I think there is an ATM in the lounge.)

“Definitely deserves a chance”

Okay, the wedge of iceberg lettuce drizzled with Ranch was a bit weird, but I found the experience to be a nice touch to a already memorable vacation. Obviously, by the crowd that had mobbed the place, this tells the whole story. The place is EXTREMELY historic, and quaint, the servers are dressed to the nines, and as people who seldom order dessert off a menu, we were practically tripping over our tongues at the desserts delivered in the dining room. (and our sweet tooth was not disappointed!!) All in all, I thought it was a fair value and would do it again, and I absolutely will go back to try their German lunches. C'mon, critics, the number of patrons they serve per night makes it hard to cater to everyone's individual whims. I thought it was of above average quality for the price and ambience. A very unique place and experience in my opinion.

“You call that a "menu"?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2006

After a 45 minute wait to be seated (the hostess said the wait would be about 15 minutes), we were shown to our cramped table in a cramped room. No menus. The waitress comes by and asks if we are "familiar with our menu". She then explains that we have a choice of a small steak or a larger steak. That's the menu.

The steaks (which were OK, but it's hard to really mess up cooking a steak) are accompanied by a large wedge of iceberg lettuce smothered in Ranch dressing (no, there are no other choices and no other vegetables in the salad.) The main course includes the steak, a baked potato, and some bread slathered in butter and toasted. No other side dishes or choices.

The dessert menu, however, is extensive, and our desserts were quite good.

So, if you want to wait a long time to get a steak and enjoy a decadent dessert, you'll probably be happy. If you aren't much of a steak fan, and like eating anything with much nutritional value, you won't be happy here!
