“You call that a "menu"?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2006

After a 45 minute wait to be seated (the hostess said the wait would be about 15 minutes), we were shown to our cramped table in a cramped room. No menus. The waitress comes by and asks if we are "familiar with our menu". She then explains that we have a choice of a small steak or a larger steak. That's the menu.

The steaks (which were OK, but it's hard to really mess up cooking a steak) are accompanied by a large wedge of iceberg lettuce smothered in Ranch dressing (no, there are no other choices and no other vegetables in the salad.) The main course includes the steak, a baked potato, and some bread slathered in butter and toasted. No other side dishes or choices.

The dessert menu, however, is extensive, and our desserts were quite good.

So, if you want to wait a long time to get a steak and enjoy a decadent dessert, you'll probably be happy. If you aren't much of a steak fan, and like eating anything with much nutritional value, you won't be happy here!

“Don't let the menu scare you.”

We went here for lunch and weren't sure what to expect since we don't normally eat German food but everyone found something to eat and it was great. The food is fresh and there are a lot of choices for lunch. We shared an apple dessert and it was great. Price is reasonable and the waitress was friendly but the hostess and the cashier seemed too busy to greet anyone with a smile or a thank you.

“Lunch Fantastoc --- Deserts Out of this World”

We had lunch there with everyone sharing. I had a Ruban which I never have see one so big. The German potato salad was fantastic and so was the sauerkraut. Best I have ever had. My mother had the bread pork chops....FANTASTIC. I was so stuffed on had to pass on the deserts, but others with me did. Mostly home made...30 in all. AGAIN Fantastic. Lunch was so good we stayed in town shopping and came back for dinner. Dinner is jus the choice of two steak sizes. Nothing special here but come to desert time you will be glad you came there. I had the Carmel Apple Cheese Cake......to die for. Wish they had mail order service!!!!!!!!!!! Price wise was very reasonable. Three in our party with large servings, drinks and desert our total bill was around $20. I saw one other review and I would say DON'T MISS THE LUNCH and regarding dinner......it was a good simple steak dinner, nothing fancy. BUT again the deserts are to die for.

“atomosphere nice, staff cold”

I have been in the hospitality industry for over twenty years, and I am a fair customer to have, I am very understanding and sympathetic to others in this business. That said on to the review.....
First we tried Alpine Inn for lunch, food was great and we did wait a long, long time for drinks, and to even be acknowledged by our server. German food is one of our favorites and we were not let down in that regard. Our server was a flirt with the men at other tables and managed to give them better service. Since we liked the food we decided we would try it for dinner.
Our server for dinner prompt, fast and no nonsense type. Steaks were very nice, I ordered mine medium rare and it had not a trace of pink to it, but it had a very nice flavor.
The desserts were wonderful and many choices, and we all tried different ones and they were all very good.
For the price, this is a must eat at establishment in Hill City. Don't expect extra friendly service though, I think they feel they are too busy to extend any warmth towards tourist.
Clean, everything is home made and it is very quaint.

“Great steaks!”

We were told that the Alpine Inn in Hill City was a good place to go for steaks. We decided to go for it and came away satisified. You get a choice of a small or large filet mignon wrapped in bacon. The salad comes with homeade ranch dressing that is awesome. After dinner they had a menu of all homeade desserts that were great too. We had to wait an hour to get a table but it was worth it!
