“Martin and Mason is the perfect intimate hotel to make your Deadwood stay exceptional and memorable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2010

I brought my son and mother-in-law to stay at Martin and Mason and it was a wonderful experience. The hotel was immaculate and the rooms restored to perfection. Our room with the lovely bathroom and spectacular, luxurious blue bedding was beautiful and most comfortable. The scones and tea in the morning were perfect and the staff went beyond the call of duty to make our stay special, from reservations to check out. We felt so welcomed and have recommended Martin and Mason to several friends already. The little casino downstairs was perfect for my mother in law and my son enjoyed an early morning run on the old train bed trail nearby. Our dinner at Jake's was lovely as well. It was a joy to meet the Martin and Mason owner, Melanie. Thanks to the Martin and Mason staff and lovely property, we have wonderful memories of our stay in Deadwood and our visit to Mt. Rushmore.

“Couldn't ask for a better place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2010

From the elevator, to the staff, to the rooms, the Martin & Mason hotel was a wonderful place to stay. My husband and I stayed there 2 nights for our anniversary and were very impressed. On our first night there we were the only ones on the floor and felt like we went back in time. It was quiet, relaxing, the bed was heavenly, and the tub delightful. One of the staff, Mona, was fantastic and told us a lot of the history on the hotel. It was clear that a lot of thought and care went into renovating this hotel and we are certainly going back to visit.

“Beautiful, Overpriced, Historic Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2010

I specifically chose this hotel because it was a historic hotel in downtown Deadwood with good reviews on TripAdvisor. My husband and I stayed in the Sanderson Suite (Room 1). The room was spacious and clean with antique furnishings and a comfortable pillow-top mattress! There was no tub in the bathroom, but a nice tile walk-in shower. There was no counter space in the bathroom, just a small metal wall shelf next to the corner sink. Soda was complimentary and provided in a community mini-fridge near the elevator. While there was a flat-screen television in the room, there was no telephone (I do not know about the availability of in-room internet service... I left my laptop at home!). There was not an alarm clock provided in the room. Scones, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate were provided in the hallway in the morning (the scones were excellent!). A coffee maker was not provided in the room.

The Martin and Mason Hotel is truly a lovely experience... except for the price! We paid roughly $250/night in April (definitely the off-season in the Black Hills). We have stayed in several other hotels that were in the price range of $200 - $250/night (including other historic hotels); all providing far more in service than the Martin and Mason. Some of the amenities that we have seen in other similar hotels have been in-room mini-fridges with complimentary beverages, coffee makers with local coffee provided, robes, and telephones. A far more appropriate price would have been in the $150 - $160/night range (the price is the only reason why I am not recommending the hotel).

“deadwood old west style.”

My spouse and i stayed here on september 16 and 17 of 2009 in the sanderson room. The hotel itself is done in the old west style of yesteryear. The furnishings are period decor. The best thing about the room was the comfortable bad and sheets.the room had two areas a sitting and tv room and the bed area .The tv could be tilted for view from the bed.The bath had a walk in shower . Most the other rooms had a claw foot tub, some in the middle of the room. (something to look into before you book a room here) . The location is off main street near hickocks casino. Or directly across from the adams museum. The service was good to very good, always happy to help if needed. Now for the bad--------- finding the place is difficult for first time visitors. You will see the name of the casino from all sides of the place but not the hotel name. The parking is another problem. They give you parking permit to be used at the place across the street, in a small 10 space area, that is around one way traffic. You cant park in front of the hotel here. The other downside is the hotel ammenities , The soap in the bath was the size of a quarter. (no kidding) . There are no phones, so you cant call the front desk.If you want ice , you will have to take the elevator down to the casino ask them to come up to your floor and get the bucket ,then they go to the basement and bring it back up to your room. Sounds confusing? I just gave them my small cooler and asked them to fill it.This place has potential but lacks in modern day comforts. If you like the taste of old style hotels this is for you. If you are use to high end hotels you will feel let down. For the price they charge at this place I feel one could do much better.

“Gotta go back here...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2009

Excellent service/staff, great location to than walk to sites of Deadwood (which are a plenty)! The hotel is historic! 1898! Renovated recently with the most comfortable beds. We loved how the small scale left this place with such a cozy and romantic feel. Don't turn down the lady offering out free baked goods in the lobby/casino!
