“Great property, great value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2011

The First Gold hotel in Deadwood, SD is a hidden treasure. It sits at the end of town on the mountain and has great access to downtown via the trolley next door that costs only $1.00. Although the property has 3 buildings at 3 levels, a golf cart comes as soon as it is called for, to transport you up or down. The food at the buffet is expemplary with a cut of prime rib to rival a high end steak house. Service is invariably friendly, with the exception of the breakfast hostess who is brusque, and check in is more than effiecient. Gaming is also available here at the building one casino, with complimentary appetizers and cookies. Rooms are up to date and clean and comfortable in building 3 where we stayed. All in all a good experience.

Room Tip: Buildings 2 & 3 have newer larger rooms.

“Decent Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

My husband and I went with another couple and thought the hotel was just fine for our needs. The rooms are nothing fancy, the beds were some of the hardest I ever slept on but we still slept fine. The check in was speedy and everyone we talked to was helpful and nice. It is a little to far to walk to downtown, but ask what times the deadwood trolley will be around. It is only $1 per person per ride, and it has 37 stops around Deadwood, so it is a pretty good value. We ate at the breakfast buffet on Saturday, there was plenty of room to sit, and the food was pretty good, I don't know if i would do it again though. As for the room price: It was at the beginning of Sturgis Bike week so everything was expensive. But overall I would stay here again if I couldn't get or afford something closer to downtown.

Room Tip: If you want a cheaper room, go when there is nothing else going on (such as sturgis)

“Okay for the price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2010

The hotel was very clean and the staff were helpful and friendly. The atmosphere was more for an older crowd and the location was off the beaten path but the trolley was convenient for travel downtown.

“I would NEVER stay here again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

With the exception of the front desk lady, Mary, in building 3, the rest of the staff were rude, and condescending. The hotel is not ADA compliant. It is very inconvenient. I can not have caffeine and their decaf urn held caffeinated coffee with no designation that it was such.

The entire complex is most certainly ADA compliant because that is our duty as providers and also as required by law. Regarding the caffeine , this is the first time in 20 years to hear that complaint .

“it was ok...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2010

i stayed here recently and it was just ok. i mean, it wasn't totally horrible but i didn't really enjoy it.

1-the room was smoking, that's what i prefer, but even i, who do not mind the smell of smoke at all, was choking on the smoke smell.
2-i paid for a queen bed and received a double. and it was a bed on wheels which was not very comfortable at all.
3-construction right outside my window-they were re-doing their front walkway or something and running a jackhammer right below my window at 8 am.
4-distance from downtown-it is a ways from where all the action is, but you shouldn't have to walk far because they have a trolley and there is parking in downtown deadwood.

now for the good-
1-the staff was pretty friendly. front desk guy said to "travel safe young lady" which was nice and of course the bartenders are nice but they're lookin for tips.
2-the casino-it is huge and it is a lot of fun. we played for a couple hours and broke even.
3-the view-the view out of my window was onto the highway but also across the street was a campground that was a little scenic and the background was definitely scenic black hills view. if you look far to the right you can see the start of downtown.

overall, i think it was probably a good hotel, for deadwood, but if i had it to do again, i wouldn't stay in deadwood at all. really it was a waste, just a lot of older people gambling at penny slots, and the hotels are wayyyyyyyy overpriced. this was the worst, and most expensive hotel i stayed in my whole trip. and i stayed in 4 different hotels in the black hills area. if you want to go to deadwood, make a day of it, and drive back to rapid city. that's my advice.

also, there is a parking ramp downtown and i think we parked there 4 hours for $7. all the other parking downtown is metered, and the trolley costs per ride, so i would highly recommed parking in the parking ramp if you have your vehicle, not worrying about the trolley!
