First, they did not honor our reservations. They changed our room without speaking with us. We reserved a non smoking bottom floor room. We got there and were put in a smoking upstairs room.

Second, we paid a pet fee to have our dogs there every night. This should have included pet hair removal. Instead we were charged a crazy amount when we left for pet hair. Not for damages, there were none, but for pet hair.

Third, they called us disrespectful names over the phone, were rude, and short.

Fourth, they never one time cleaned the room during our entire stay.

Fifth, their breakfast was insulting. Tiny bagels, not even real size and boxed STALE cereal. We ended up going out to eat and spending the extra money out of our budget instead of eating the horrible spread they provided. No yogurt. No fruit. Stale cereal that you’re not allowed to bring to your room to eat, milk you can only put in your cereal not allowed to put in your coffee or drink a glass of. This place was very much a dictatorship.
The ONLY good thing about it was: 1. The hot tub/pool were nicely maintained and 2. The Location. Because of the location they are allowed to be rude and dirty, not keep to their contracts and cheat people out of money. They have a monopoly on the business and thus can treat people however they want. Which means without respect.

This is a small hotel that tries very hard to do everything right, and it shows. Front desk was very accommodating and anxious to please. We had a non-smoking/no pets room with one queen and two single beds so it was clean and had plenty of room for us to spread out. There's a nice indoor pool and sauna that was very popular with the kids. Breakfast buffet included cereals and a wide assortment of breads, plus coffee and juice. It's located on the very edge of town, but De Smet is so small that almost everything in town is within walking distance. Not a fancy place to stay, but probably the best of what this small town has to offer. If I ever return, I'd stay here again.

I stayed at this hotel in De Smet (formerly known as the Super 8) while in town for the Laura Ingalls Homestead. This hotel is right at the start of the town of De Smet, just down the road from the Homestead and the Thompson Lake area to the east, and the town to the west. It was very convenient to the sights I wanted to see, as well as some cheap/good places to eat in town.

The room was great...big comfortable bed, and two lounge chairs with footstools, perfect for kicking back and watching TV. I was definitely not expecting that! The lobby is great, with a big pool and jacuzzi inside as well. Continental breakfast included cereals, fruits, bagels, and coffee (no juice). Free wireless internet, and a computer for guest use in the upstairs lobby. It was a very quiet hotel with a great attentive staff, and very clean. There's nothing really fancy about it, but it's a great place to stay when you're on the road and need a bed.

We stayed over a Saturday night while seeing the Ingalls sites in the area. The hotel was OK - nothing spectacular, and a little pricey given the condition of the property - but was fine for what we needed. The rooms were a bit shabby feeling, but fairly clean and no problems. The staff was nice. There was no hair dryer in the room, but was available at the desk upon request. They did serve breakfast. Not a lot of variety, but given the independent ownership I don't think you can expect what you do from a chain. The town and people were very nice and I think this was probably a good choice if you want to stay right in town rather than a larger city like Huron or Brookings.
