“Excellent historical B&B in a pastoral setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2009

Arrived late afternoon to find a beautiful former private home on a large lot with amazing lawn and garden setting. We were apparently not expected because of a glitch with the host's internet provider. Fortunately business was slow and we had the place to ourselves. We were greeted warmly and shown to the room we had chosen online. The "private" bath turned out to be a "dedicated" bath instead located on a public hallway. Oops!, We were offered another adjacent room that had a true private bath (shower only, but this was preferred anyway) We were given our keys (including main entrance, house is always locked.) Beautiful furnishings throughout. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was ready when we requested and was delicious. We were on our way early and well rested for the road. Price was equivalent to local upscale modern motels/suites and far exceeded them in ambience and hospitality.

“Highly recommend!”

My longtime friend and I stayed here this past weekend for a Gal's Getaway. It happened to be exactly halfway between her coming from NC and me from GA. And what a pleasant environment the Inn provided for such an occasion. The innkeepers gave excellent service and paid attention to little details that make a big difference like CD players in each room with custom tapes of soothing music, a write up of the home's history, a mini frig in the hallway with beverages (and to hold our leftovers from dinner out, etc.) I could have brought a bottle of wine and kept it refrigerated, if I thought about it. And the meals were absolutely delicious, especially the french toast. My friend stayed in the Wisteria Room, a corner room adding extra windows and fresh air; it also had comfortable seating with two armchairs where we spent most of our time chatting. I slept in the Orchard Room that faced East giving it a great sunrise view (it was worth setting the alarm for, then going back to sleep). I read that the Inn is on the highest elevatation point from Greenville to Spartanburg, the sunrise may have been extra special for that reason. There were plenty of outdoor areas to enjoy: two large porches on either side of the house, one with rocking chairs and the other with a swing. And there was another swing in the yard under a shady tree that had a great view of the home's grandeur from a distance. There was also a koi pond, croquet set available, birdfeeders, a very friendly cat named Sophie that would make an occasional appearance outside, etc. We were satisfied with the places that we dined: The Clock and Don Juan's were less than a mile away and Tops Pizza was a very short walk. It was such a peaceful and tranquil place with all the nature (fresh air, birds chirping, koi pond, porch rocking and swinging, etc.) that it felt like quite a retreat. All of this was probably enhanced, too, being that it was the first weekend of Spring. And best of all, the innkeepers gave us privacy while always being accessible for questions (with a simple ring of the service bell). Some people enjoy the social aspect of B&Bs, conversing with and getting to know the innkeepers, but I really appreciated them giving us our space. The whole weekend was like getting one long massage, as it was so relaxing for the body and soul...and the innkeepers created such an environment, keeping piano music playing in the living room, etc. It was like a massage when the masseuse doesn't talk the whole time, but is just there to make everything feel perfect. And even though there were other guests staying there, we felt like we had the house and grounds to ourselves. And everything was so very clean, which is the most important thing to me when staying somewhere. Everything exceeded my expectations. The only thing that did not appear to be what I was expecting were the orchards, but only because I was envisioning something else. To me, the orchards looked more like a nicely landscaped yard, which was just as fine...but I think I was envisioning a working orchard with crops and all; maybe I just didn't look close enough. Or maybe the orchards were more of a representation of the past when the house was surrounded by thousands of orchard acres. We were disappointed not to be able to take horse trailrides as mentioned on the inn's website because the nearby stable was permanently closed; perhaps another one will open soon. The inn would make a beautiful venue for weddings, which they seem to have there often (there was a photo album with wedding photos). Any type of gathering there seemed perfect. We returned from lunch on Sunday to find a group of older ladies all happily attired in dresses and hats having a luncheon or something there. It was a perfect setting to go back in time to the simpler, yet grand, days of the past. I hope to return again soon. Also, just 10 miles north is Hatcher Gardens, a woodsy path that intertwines creeks, ponds, and a waterfall. Free admission, open dusk to dawn, 365 days of the year. Worth the trip and added to the very relaxed weekend. [--]. I stopped there as well as drove thru a few of Spartanburg's historical districts. What a great weekend it was!

“Hospitality at the Walnut Lane Inn”

Beautiful inn and grounds, lovely room. We enjoyed our stay - it was very peaceful and quiet at the Inn. Had dinner at Don Juan's just a few minutes away - there were two or three other choices within a short drive. Lots of weddings here and I can see why! We had wonderful peach-stuffed french toast for breakfast - Hoyt cans his own peaches from his trees. Thanks for the warm welcome!

“Beautiful building and grounds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2006

From the outside, this was one of the most beautiful homes in which I have stayed. The porches and grounds are also used for weddings, so they are kept very well. When we arrived, during the designated 3:00 - 6:00 time, we found the door locked and noone answering the doorbell. After some time, I looked up the phone number and called. They were "out back" they said and could not hear us. When we entered, It felt more like a hotel than a B&B... cash register at the door to check out, a room off the lobby where they sell gift items and no tour. We were however given the rules of the house... if you need someone, ring the bell, (Noone answered the two times we did this.) no walking around the back of the house, And you must park in the lot that they use for guests when they have a wedding some 50 feet from the building. The living room and dining room were furnished beautifully. When we called ahead to ask about dinner, they said we would need to go to the next town about 30 miles away, so we bought sandwiches on the way and ate on the wide varanda overlooking the grounds. It was beautiful. The stairs are very narrow and steep. Our room was large, but the drapes on the bed were dusty which caused a little problem for our allergies. The bathroom was small and dark with no tub. In order to have light you had to listen to a noisy fan in the ceiling. The windows in our room would not open. The book in our room said that there were snacks and drinks in a fridge at the top of the stairs, but there were none. Our bed was comfortable, our room was well decorated with plenty of comfortable places to sit, and the breakfast was delicious.

Hello,

We have been made aware of your review and found it very disturbing. Yes, we did ask that you allow us some privacy by not going behind the house, but it was also for your safety, since our gardening supplies are stored there.

We are very sorry about not hearing the bell, but as we advised you, we do take our dogs for walks and since it was June, we were most likely working in the yard. This is also our home and being a small business, we can not afford to hire a person to stay at the registration desk. We only wished you had said something to us instead of posting this negative review.

As for the cash register, yes, there is one located at the front, because of our gift shop and we also need it since we are open for lunch M-F. We do not like it being there either, but we have no other option. We are also sorry you misunderstood about dinner, as we have many restaurants located within a couple of miles of the inn and a multitude located within 15 minutes of the inn.

Again, we are sorry your experience was not what you had expected. During your future travels, please always advise the innkeepers of these experiences so they can correct them immediately. In 8 years, this is the first complaint we have had and we wished we had been given that opportunity.

Please come and stay with us again if you are in the area.

Best regards,

Hoyt & David
