My longtime friend and I stayed here this past weekend for a Gal's Getaway. It happened to be exactly halfway between her coming from NC and me from GA. And what a pleasant environment the Inn provided for such an occasion. The innkeepers gave excellent service and paid attention to little details that make a big difference like CD players in each room with custom tapes of soothing music, a write up of the home's history, a mini frig in the hallway with beverages (and to hold our leftovers from dinner out, etc.) I could have brought a bottle of wine and kept it refrigerated, if I thought about it. And the meals were absolutely delicious, especially the french toast. My friend stayed in the Wisteria Room, a corner room adding extra windows and fresh air; it also had comfortable seating with two armchairs where we spent most of our time chatting. I slept in the Orchard Room that faced East giving it a great sunrise view (it was worth setting the alarm for, then going back to sleep). I read that the Inn is on the highest elevatation point from Greenville to Spartanburg, the sunrise may have been extra special for that reason. There were plenty of outdoor areas to enjoy: two large porches on either side of the house, one with rocking chairs and the other with a swing. And there was another swing in the yard under a shady tree that had a great view of the home's grandeur from a distance. There was also a koi pond, croquet set available, birdfeeders, a very friendly cat named Sophie that would make an occasional appearance outside, etc. We were satisfied with the places that we dined: The Clock and Don Juan's were less than a mile away and Tops Pizza was a very short walk. It was such a peaceful and tranquil place with all the nature (fresh air, birds chirping, koi pond, porch rocking and swinging, etc.) that it felt like quite a retreat. All of this was probably enhanced, too, being that it was the first weekend of Spring. And best of all, the innkeepers gave us privacy while always being accessible for questions (with a simple ring of the service bell). Some people enjoy the social aspect of B&Bs, conversing with and getting to know the innkeepers, but I really appreciated them giving us our space. The whole weekend was like getting one long massage, as it was so relaxing for the body and soul...and the innkeepers created such an environment, keeping piano music playing in the living room, etc. It was like a massage when the masseuse doesn't talk the whole time, but is just there to make everything feel perfect. And even though there were other guests staying there, we felt like we had the house and grounds to ourselves. And everything was so very clean, which is the most important thing to me when staying somewhere. Everything exceeded my expectations. The only thing that did not appear to be what I was expecting were the orchards, but only because I was envisioning something else. To me, the orchards looked more like a nicely landscaped yard, which was just as fine...but I think I was envisioning a working orchard with crops and all; maybe I just didn't look close enough. Or maybe the orchards were more of a representation of the past when the house was surrounded by thousands of orchard acres. We were disappointed not to be able to take horse trailrides as mentioned on the inn's website because the nearby stable was permanently closed; perhaps another one will open soon. The inn would make a beautiful venue for weddings, which they seem to have there often (there was a photo album with wedding photos). Any type of gathering there seemed perfect. We returned from lunch on Sunday to find a group of older ladies all happily attired in dresses and hats having a luncheon or something there. It was a perfect setting to go back in time to the simpler, yet grand, days of the past. I hope to return again soon. Also, just 10 miles north is Hatcher Gardens, a woodsy path that intertwines creeks, ponds, and a waterfall. Free admission, open dusk to dawn, 365 days of the year. Worth the trip and added to the very relaxed weekend. [--]. I stopped there as well as drove thru a few of Spartanburg's historical districts. What a great weekend it was!
