My husband and I traveled to the Red Horse Inn to celebrate his birthday. The grounds were lovely and quiet, very peaceful. We rented the Springhouse cottage and thought it was quaint and charming. There was a small living room with a sofa and small t.v, kitchen, and a deck with a hot tub, which we really enjoyed. The view from the back was lovely and there was plenty of privacy.
We traveled into Landrum the first night for dinner, which was a short drive away. The next day we traveled to a beautiful waterfall and did some sightseeing. Mary gave us a list of attractions in the area and offered suggestions. Only if you want the package with all of the coupons is there a charge for the "activity packages." (a list of nearby attractions) We arranged to have massages in our room in the afternoon, which were very relaxing. The massages were good, but not the best we've had. We had dinner from the inn brought to our room that night, so it was wonderful not to have to leave our room! My scampi was great and plenty of it. My husband had the filet mignon, which was slightly overdone. His biggest complaint was the scalloped potatoes, which he swore tasted just like Betty Crocker. He was rather disappointed with his meal.
We really enjoyed our weekend here and would definitely return. It is a beautiful setting and we loved the peace and serenity of it all. It was so nice to get away and have some down time.
Not to be too picky, but I will point out a few things that we noticed which could be improved upon. First, the window boxes of our cottage had some plastic flowers in them, and the real ones left in them were dead and needed to be removed. Silk rose petals were strewn on our bed when we arrived; nice, but we would say to just skip it if real ones can't be used. I also read several reviews which mentioned the uncomfortable furniture and I must agree. There are two chairs in front of the fireplace which would be great for snuggling in with a good book, but they are not at all comfortable. Chairs in front of the fire should be cozy, not hard wingbacks. Also, the breakfast was not at all memorable. There was a basket in our fridge with packets of grits and oatmeal and some store bought, packaged muffins. We also had some grapes with granola and creme fraiche, which was the best of the breakfast items. My husband nor myself are big breakfast eaters, so this was not such a big deal to us, but I can certainly see where it would be to others.
As I said, we had a wonderful weekend, thought the inn was lovely, and would return. We did not have lots of contact with the owners, but when we did they were pleasant and helpful. A great birthday getaway!
