My husband and i stayed here back in may, on part of our honeymoon.
We'd spent 6 days in manhatten and knew we'd be needing a few days away from the hectic city. We knew nothing about rhode island but after a little (and it probably was too little!) research online, thought it looked like a beautiful place to escape to, and another part of the usa to see.
When i say we did little research, we hadn't anticipated such a ....'remote' area, and arrived by train. We walked out to this lovely, small, quiet town. And i guess quite stupidly assumed there would be a taxi rank. Far from it! We were a little lost as to where to go from here, but thanks to the lovely locals in the coffee shop opposite, rang for a taxi. it was alot further from the station than we'd expected, but we learned after that we'd been ripped off by the taxi driver, who apparently had taken us the long way round!
Anyway, we arrived at the beautiful location we'd hoped for, and the shelter harbor inn itself was perfect. The staff were lovely, and the house and the grounds really were special. We just had one problem........
Lets just say when you're going somewhere you know nothing about, dont always rely on google maps! We'd hoped to see some of rhode island and thought foot and taxi would be adequate, oh how we were wrong! The staff couldn't believe we'd arrived without, or hired a car! We were quite literally stranded! Or at least thats what we thought. We ended up having a fantastic weekend, thanks to the helpful staff, fortunate weather and amazing food! Luckily for us, the resturant served food allday so thankfully being carless didn't mean we'd starve! and the owner jim, was extremely kind in offering us a lift to the nearest seaside town on his way to the bank on one of our days!
It really was one of our best stays, and the highlight was the complimentary breakfast. The choice was unbelievable and everything we had was delicious!
Highly recommended, would definetly go back if we ever get the chance.
