“A great time, BUT...”

Overall, a very nice place, but you do have to be prepared to deal with some eccentricities, shall we say. Although not as crazy as the Inn depicted in the John Cleese sitcom Fawlty Towers, it does have some things to deal with, mostly from the owner and his new wife, who fancies herself an expert on everything there, which upon closer inspection is clearly not the case, but don't try to tell her that! The heat/AC system in the rooms, the fireplaces smoking out the dining rooms, the catering to the group of paddleball players at the expense of others....if you can put up with these, then it is nice, the location is great, the food in the restaurant very nice, as is most of the staff. So check it out, but be prepared!

“Great birthday weekend!”

We just got back from a wonderful stay. We took advantage of the winter weekend special - $229/weekend including hotel tax and 2 full breakfasts each day. We stayed in room 19 in the barn that shares a "living/dining" huge space with room 20. The room was huge. Breakfasts were made to order with a choice each morning including crab benedict, apple pancakes, omelets...The crab (and salmon) cake was light and tasty....a perfect start to the day. We didn't have time to take advantage of the hot tub or deck/grill but it is open year-round. I would return. We started the weekend with the wine dinner --also a treat!

Room Tip: Rooms 19 and 20 seem to share a living space. The space is open to guests, but I can't imagine...

“Bad Experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Having stayed there previously, I booked a room for a recent trip with a friend. The original room booked was in the "barn." It was so musty, I woke up with a migraine and my friend, a horrible asthma attack. They gratiously allowed me to switch rooms, saying that another double was available in the main house for the remainder of my stay. All went well until the day before we were to checkout. On a whim, we stopped back at the inn about noon and the housekeeper making up our room said (in very broken English) that someone else was checking into that room that night. I went down to see what was going on, and was told yes, someone else had booked that room and that we were either going to have to go back to our original room OR move to a double. Neither was an acceptable solution so we checked out. I understand that mix-ups can occur, but what really steamed me was that we had to learn about all this from the maid. While the front desk staff was apologetic, the owner of the inn looked right at me and never said a word nor did they offer to help us find another place to stay. Ended up at a Holiday Inn Express -- great room, better food, and better price. If you're looking for good customer service, this is not the place. I won't be back.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house. Avoid the barn!

“Amazing!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

My husband and i stayed here back in may, on part of our honeymoon.

We'd spent 6 days in manhatten and knew we'd be needing a few days away from the hectic city. We knew nothing about rhode island but after a little (and it probably was too little!) research online, thought it looked like a beautiful place to escape to, and another part of the usa to see.

When i say we did little research, we hadn't anticipated such a ....'remote' area, and arrived by train. We walked out to this lovely, small, quiet town. And i guess quite stupidly assumed there would be a taxi rank. Far from it! We were a little lost as to where to go from here, but thanks to the lovely locals in the coffee shop opposite, rang for a taxi. it was alot further from the station than we'd expected, but we learned after that we'd been ripped off by the taxi driver, who apparently had taken us the long way round!

Anyway, we arrived at the beautiful location we'd hoped for, and the shelter harbor inn itself was perfect. The staff were lovely, and the house and the grounds really were special. We just had one problem........

Lets just say when you're going somewhere you know nothing about, dont always rely on google maps! We'd hoped to see some of rhode island and thought foot and taxi would be adequate, oh how we were wrong! The staff couldn't believe we'd arrived without, or hired a car! We were quite literally stranded! Or at least thats what we thought. We ended up having a fantastic weekend, thanks to the helpful staff, fortunate weather and amazing food! Luckily for us, the resturant served food allday so thankfully being carless didn't mean we'd starve! and the owner jim, was extremely kind in offering us a lift to the nearest seaside town on his way to the bank on one of our days!

It really was one of our best stays, and the highlight was the complimentary breakfast. The choice was unbelievable and everything we had was delicious!

Highly recommended, would definetly go back if we ever get the chance.

Room Tip: You will need transport!

“New England Lodging at its' best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

If you are looking for a beautiful New England Inn.....Shelter Harbor is the place. The rooms are very spacious and cozy, the food excellent and the staff couldn't have been nicer. It was a wonderful place to celebrate my birthday.
