We stayed at Champlin's again this summer (our 3rd time there). Traditionally, we have docked our boat as a transient, and stayed in the on site lodging overlooking the pool. This year we elected to stay on our boat so my review of the lodging dates back to my expreience in 2010.
On the whole, I recommend this marina as it provides a breath of services not typically seen in many New England marinas. There is a nice bar at the end of the docks, a pool on the property, a playground, bumper and paddle boats, park benches with outdoor grills and of course a laundry room, sundries store, casual restaurant and mini-cafe (food is marginal at both places). I also understand there is a single screen "movie theater" on the property but I haven't been to it.
The Positives:
The docks themselves are nicely maintained and the dock staff was adept at assisting in docking, pumping gas, etc.
The other customers seem to really be a nice group of people and this is very important while staying at a dock. A nice mix of couples and families with children lead to lots of impromptu socialization. (Meeting the neighbors is not something we typically crave on vacation, but it's nice when you are quasi-camping on a boat.)
The pool and the musical group playing there were fun.
The staff at the bumper boats were friendly.
Negatives:
THE GUEST ROOMS": As for the rooms, my experience dates back to 2009 & 2010, but it looks as though nothing has changed, and the rooms are continuing on a path to really unappealing. They are dated and dingy and look as though there has been no attempt at upkeep, at least on the interiors. The furnishings and fabrics look circa mid-80s and the bathrooms look more like from the 70s, and done cheaply then.
The main shared bathrooms adjacent to the pool can also really use some modernization. Finding a clean shower with good water pressure and a controllable temperature seemed a trifecta winnable only by a lottery.
Overall, this marina pulls us back because it has a lot to offer and there are not many other worthwhile choices on Block Isand. It is definitely not the Montauk Yacht Club, but it makes due as a good place to dock your boat.
