We arrived at the Smoketown Lodge en route to a wedding. The interior of the building consisted of a narrow musty hallway with a "Registration" window at the far end, and guest rooms along the hallway -- very claustrophobic and unappealing -- a throwback to the '50s or earlier. Our first impression was "how did we ever pick this place," but, with no time to spare before the wedding, we paid by credit card and went quickly to our room to drop off our bags. As we entered the room, which had a light-duty residential passage lock on the door -- no security lock or substantial doorknob set -- we were greeted by a sickening smell, like old musty rugs or something, accompanied by a whiff of antiseptic, an attempt to cover the smell. We changed clothes quickly and went to the wedding, but when we returned, the smell was still there. We met another couple at the wedding who had checked in here and left with the same complaint. We couldn't bring ourselves to spend the night in this place, so we left the wedding party early and drove home. We had flushed the toilet exactly once and not made any other changes to the room, but when we tried to get a refund, or so much as an apology, from the manager, he refused to cooperate in any way. So it was an expensive lesson for us.

Since Smoketown Motor Lodge has been family owned for over 35 years, our reputation is important to us. If a customer registers a complaint, we will address the concern as quickly as
possible. With regard to the complaint registered on Aug. 31, the following steps were taken.
1. The room was inspected by (3) staff members and no odor of any kind was discovered.
2. Had their been an odor we would have placed an ozone machine in the room for the
prescribed amount of time which purifies the air.
3. After running the ozone machine, it is then recommended to open the windows to allow
fresh air into the room.
I find it ironic that the customer did not come to us upon entering the room at check-in. It was not until customer decided to leave the wedding early that this problem arose. Thanks, Mike
