“Eh...so-so.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2010

You have to prepare yourself that this is a very old hotel in a very small town. The food was not anything spectacular. The web site says they have a great buffet every Saturday - when we asked about it they said it was Sunday. I ordered fish - only to be told a few mintues later they were out of fish because of a fish fry the night before. The web site also says they are known for their rice pudding, fresh pies, and cheesecakes. Can't say if they are good or not - they did not have anything but a few slices of pumpkin pie. It was okay. The rooms are small with just the essentials (bring a clock!) and the bathrooms are very basic (bring a hair dryer!). I guess it was clean but the carpets were stained so that grossed me out. There were no blankets for the bed - just a sheet and the bedspread. The rooms have radiator heating so it was noisy and got very warm. With the window open it got too cold. The hotel reminded me of the movie The Shining. On the bright side it is right next door to the library where Phil resides and within walking distance of several of the cute groundhog statues. If I were to return to Punxsy I don't think I would stay here, but it was not the worst experience of my life.

“It's OK for a Night or Two”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

I stayed there on a Monday night. Very few rooms were occupied and the restaurant was closed. Staff was polite, the room was clean and the mattress was a typical hotel mattress, not the best. There was no blanket on the bed, though, just the bed spread. It got pretty cold the night I stayed there. The night desk man told me that the steam heating had not yet been activated for the winter and he brought an electric heater up to my room, which kept it warm and cozy. Bathroom was the worst part of the room. It was tiny and there was no ventilation. Towels were of good quality and clean. Plenty of hot water for showering and soap and shampoo were provided but as has been noted, there was no hair dryer. I had a non-smoking room and there was not a trace of cigarette smoke, which is excellent in my book. I've stayed in the big chain hotels in non-smoking rooms where cigarette smoke had infiltrated into the room.

The hotel has a 2 diamond rating. I feel that its rating should be changed to1 diamond.

“A real hotel. It may be old, but it was clean.”

We pulled into Punxsutawney at 7 at night. Stopped at a gas station and asked for hotels in the area. He said the only one he knew about was the Pantall. We called and got a room at a very reasonable rate. (July is not high season for this little town.) When we walked in, it was definitely old world hotel, not a chain. The lush green carpet and old woodwork was a pleasant change from the cookie cutter hotels we usually stay in. (I prefer chains because I know what I'm getting.) Our room was, uh, not the usual type, a bit smaller than we are used to. It had two twin beds with a window air conditioner, one desk with a TV on top. The bathroom looked like it used to be a closet. The room was clean and we had a good night's sleep. The water was hot and plentiful. What more do we need for a brief stay?

We ate breakfast in the restaurant and noticed construction underway. The food was OK. They have recently changed ownership and are renovating the hotel. We did not visit the top floor, but they said it is brand new for receptions, etc. There are a few repairs to be made, but still was a pleasant visit. They even have the original "Ladies Only " entrance sign by the side door.

The staff was very helpful, guiding us to a restaurant still serving after 9:00 pm. The next day, my glasses broke as we were preparing to leave town. The person on staff found an optometrist close by and called for me. They were able to repair my glasses quickly.

The small town was very quaint. Obviously, not much to do outside of Feb 2. We enjoyed the Phantastic Phils, whimsical 6' fiberglass goundhogs decorated in many different ways. There are a total of 32 with quite a few within walking distance of the hotel. Everyone we ran into was very pleasant.

We probably won't visit again, but it was a nice stop over on our way home from New Jersey. The nearby Pennsylvania countryside is breathtaking.

“Maybe not the best choice.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

I you are used to the amenities of large chain hotels you don't want to stay here. It is an old somewhat renovated hotel and the only hotel in Punxsutawney. The lobby is drab and uninviting. Staff mediocre at best, did their job with no frills. Room very old and worn looking. Furniture eclectic possibly from yard sales, no two pieces matched. One nightstand, one low dresser with TV, one desk with straight backed chair and one very worn upholstered chair. Carpet worn with frayed areas. Bathroom very small with one small shelf to place toiletries, definitely turn of the century. The room was clean with minimum, very worn towels. No hairdryer or iron, possibly available from staff, we didn't ask. Air conditioning via window unit approximately 2 ft from bed and very noisy. We had to turn a/c off to sleep due to noise and then on to cool room and then off to sleep. It was not a restful night. We did not eat there. I appreciate the owners attempt to renovate and the endeavor is worthwhile but perhaps the needs are greater than the owner can give.

“Seventh Circle of Hell”

Some of the other reviews have the same bullet points, but im going to point them out again anyway so you know that those complaints in earlier reviews are not just one time occurrences:

I would have preferred a bed of nails to the "bed" provided in the hotel rooms. It felt like I had passed out on a pile of bricks when I woke up in the morning (after finally passing out from exhaustion around 3am, the bed was so uncomfortable I couldnt fall asleep).

There is no way to regulate the room temperature. Steam radiators blast heat all night, so you can either try to live with that or open a window and freeze.

There were stains on the sheets and long hairs on my pillow when I checked in.

The ceilings/walls are apparently paper thin, because I could hear conversations between couples crystal clearly while in my room.

There is no desk, no closet, no iron/ironing board, the curtains dont close all the way, the TV is so old it has knobs that you have to use to adjust the volume, and the remote doesnt work from more than 2 feet away.

Signs describe the rooms as "Brand New" all over the hotel. This is a complete lie, if this was 1960 these rooms still wouldnt feel Brand New. The ceiling is sagging and has water stains. The chair in the room looks like a chair someone is trying to give away for free on the side of the road and in your head you know that even if someone paid you a considerable amount of money to sit in that chair, you would still vehemently refuse. I dont have words in my vocabulary that could come close to accurately describing how horrifying the bathroom is.

Under no circumstance would I ever recommend this hotel to anyone. Don't stay here. Sleep in your car, it will be a more pleasant experience.
