“Low review only because of the beds, and now a Hilton Garden Inn”

If you need to be in the Oakland area, or right upon the University, this is a fabulous location, and fairly easy to navigate from around the general downtown area. This hotel just recently changed flags from Wyndham to Hilton Garden inn, and it has been remodeled. Valet parking, otherwise you have to chance it with very expensive meters. Very kind staff to this business traveler, and the meeting rooms were very nice. Overall excellent experience. My one concern are the beds. The "choose your snooze" feature wasnt explained, and I missed the little sign in the room. It was like one inch of foam rubber over concrete! Only the next night did I find the little dial on the side to soften it, but at the lowest setting, it was still firmer than I would like, and I have a fairly firm mattress at home.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, ask for a room on the back of the hotel. Some nights the medical helicop...

“Meh... ok I guess...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Alright hotel to sleep at.... But, as other reviewer said, no air escape in the bathroom. Valet ONLY parking at a mid-scale hotel? Give me a break. I can park my car, thank you. Stay away from the on-site restaurant. I was told by a coworker that it used to be good prior to renovation, but heard mixed results since. I figured I'd give it a try with wings appitizers and a burger - what could go wrong? Ahhh..no... go to the McDonalds down the street as they have been making burgers for over 50 years. Mine was WAY overdone and DRY. Tasted like a Sams club frozen burger that was already pre-cooked. The wings were nasty too. I made a mistake by breaking my business travel oath: "never eat at a hotel restaurant if there are few (or none) customers" - lesson re-established. If you need to stay at this exact place due to business, then that's ok - maybe. Just go elsewhere to eat - there's a great Italian place down the street - "Joe Mammas" or something.

“Stay away - at least for now”

I recently stayed at this hotel while attending an athletic event for my children. The hotel is under MAJOR renovations. All floors, lobby, hallways you name it is being worked on. It's basically a mess and extremely noisy. Our team was constantly being caught in the elevators. Not good with small children, very scary. When we asked to take the stairs we had to actually walk through the kitchen or outside to access the stair wells. Then the stairwells were being painted. I feel if you truly need to leave the hotel open maybe choice one area to work on instead of everything all at once. It's just poor customer service.
The staff at front desk did a lot of apologizing. After renovations this may be a nice place. It is in a good location to restaurants and the college.

“Hotel was Acceptable..even with the renovations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

Stood here 2 nights in early Nov for the Bruce Springsteen concert at Soldiers & Hall. Was close in walking distance to venue, which is important when u are walking at 1 AM in the morning back from show . Had one of the newly renovated rooms it was clean. Walls were thin as we heard the people next door come in at 3 AM and heard their whole conversation.
Only complaint I had was that we asked night before for a cab pick up at 7:30 AM back to Airport and apparently they did not have the request. They called one while we waited and took about 15 minutes to arrive. Glad we were not pressed for time. I would stay there again after the renos.

“read this before you consider this hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

I needed a room for one night as I was having surgery the next day. We are Wyndham Point members and had more than enough points for one night--my husband travels for work and has stayed at a Wyndham property around 140 days this past year. Reviews were not great, so I called and discussed with Wyndham Rewards the possibilities. This is the closest to the hospital I needed to be at. There were no redemptions for that night there so Wyndham Rewards called them on conference with me and although there were open rooms for the night, they would not open them for redemption points. We spoke with someone who was the manager, she professed to be, who was actually rude. I ended up at Super 8 Pittsburgh/Monroeville also thru Wyndham Rewards and was pleasantly surprised. The Super 8 will get my return business and referrals and the Wyndham Pittsburgh University Place should not only renovate their building (as they are in the middle of) but renovate their personnels attitude. Also, the Wyndham rewards people were more than helpful but had their hands tied.
