We live in the New Hope area and selected Porches on the Towpath as a gift to friends who were driving up from Georgia to visit. It was an important, personal occasion, so we wanted to find a special place for them to stay. Therefore, we visited Porches in person prior to booking a room for a weekend that was 6 weeks away. John, the owner, showed us two rooms and we shared with him the reason behind the visit. The next day we booked a room and were charged one night's stay on our credit card. Then, four days before our friends were to arrive, we got a message from Chrissy at Porches, informing us that they had double booked our room and were giving it to someone else. We called back to express our shock. John answered and said we'd have to speak to Chrissy who had left for the day. He essentially washed his hands of it. The next day we spoke to Chrissy who apologized, but said there was nothing she could do about the gaff, though she had found a substitute room at another B&B (a place we had looked at during our initial search and rejected.) She made no other effort to compensate for this huge and unprofessional error (the place has about 12 rooms, so it's difficult to imagine how someone could make such a basic mistake.) She showed no remorse or empathy for the position she was leaving us in -- scrambling to find a nice place on a busy summer weekend four days in advance. Finally, we told her that at the very least, we felt we should be given a voucher for a future stay. She said she'd have to check with John, and he called back to say they would mail us a voucher for a one-night Sun-Thurs stay. Needless to say, the voucher never arrived.
We have traveled extensively and have stayed in all kinds of places high and low. But never have we experienced this type of treatment. Do yourself a favor and choose another of the lovely inns or B&B's in the area. Or book at your own risk!
