Have stayed here a number of times over the years, most recently this month. Personally, I love that it's not wall to wall slickness - I like its faded 60s ski resort glam, but understand that for those not familiar with the feel of the early days of Australian skiing, it must seem a bit shabby.
It is poor value if considered against hotels in standard places, but this not a standard place, even out of season, so bearing this in mind, I think it justifies its price. I think in fact, the hotel is the only place in the quiet season where you can stay just for one night (others that are open require min 2 or 3night stays). You could stay down at Jindabyne for a lot less, but there is something special about being up amongst the snow gums.We stayed in a Terrace room, which has a sunny terrace overlooking the slopes. Comfortable, if not luxurious. In good weather, Thredbo is a good destination for a relaxing few days of walking, tennis, fishing, or just chilling.
My only real gripe is availablility of decent, affordable food. This trip we travelled without our 3 teenagers and so eating at the very good (but too expensive for 5 people) Cascades was fine. However when they are with us, we stay in Jindabyne where food options are more varied. The only option, other than Casades, is the pub bistro (at the Thredbo A.H.)and it's really dreadful (and we eat in a lot of clubs) - the atmosphere, food quality and selection is very poor. I am told it's the same chef in each of the T.A.H. restaurants so don't understand why the bistro is this way. If it was better, we would stay at Thredbo when the kids are with us too, so the Hotel misses out - and I'm sure, talking to others, we are not the only ones making this choice.
Also, speaking about Thredbo generally (not the Hotel), we were told (by Thredbo information line) that the Kosciuszko walk was 'closed' last week. We almost didn't come to Thredbo at all because of this advice. However looking at the webcams, thought we would chance it and see how far we could safely walk. Having enjoyed a beautiful Spring walk on a cloudless day to the summit of Mt K, we were joined by at least 50 others at the top of Australia....what's with the 'closed' advice? I can understand that caution is needed to make the walk, but telling people in an officious tone that it's 'closed' is just not true.
Room Tip: There is no lift in the three level hotel; however if you don't mind stairs, 3rd floor terrace r...

Dear sasanqua,
Thanks for your review. I am pleased that you appreciate the character and charm our alpine hotel, set amongst the snowgums. It truely does have a alpine feel and tranquility to it, especially during the low season. I apologise that the Pub menu does not meet you tastes, the menu is designed to be a simple pub meal in comparison to the many other restaurants in Thredbo that offer full a la carte style food similar to Cascades as you have mentioned. The Pub & Bistro was one of the most dined in establishments this winter season with many guests prefferring this simple menu option. Of course all feedback is good feedback and with a new menu on the schedule for December we will endevour to offer a more rounded menu for the summer season. Inregards to the information that the Kosi walk was closed, the hotel does not operate this information line, however it should be noted that the walks are managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service and the information that the information line gives out is based on the advice from the Parks and Wildlife Service who obviously deemed that the walk to the top of Kosi should be closed at that time of year either due to safety or to protect native vegetation in a vulnerable time of year. Of course some people do not choose to follow those instructions, but the information line must offer information based on this.
Thanks again for your review.
