“Convenient location, and I'll go with it being cosy but way too noisy for a decent nights sleep”

We stayed New Years Eve and found it to be a fab location for what we wanted to do for the weekend which was to enjoy the band in the village square last night and then take a walk up Mt Kosciuszko this morning.

The downside was the cardboard thin walls and doors. We could hear every single noise our neighbours made both either side of us and above us. When we first went into our room my husband asked me to check that the door was properly closed (it was) as it sounded like some people talking out in the corridor were in our room with us. We could hear our neighbours conversations, their TV over the top of ours and when they went to the bathroom.... we were also woken up during the night as people came back to their rooms at all hours.

And it wasn't just us, when we checked out there was a couple in front of us complaining about the noise levels during the night.

We love Thredbo but I think we'll go back to staying in the various lovely apartments around town rather than stay at this hotel again.

“Cosy and charming!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 December 2011

The tourist information office in Thredbo village recommended this hotel and it's "Discover Thredbo" package for $199 inclusive of room, breakfast and chairlift pass and it is really great value! The hotel is older and rooms smaller but they're oh so comfortable and cosy (love that king bed)! Our top floor room was conveniently located near the back door at the top car park making it easy access to carry our luggage into the room and also easy for coming and going when exploring the village. The room was warm and very quiet (double glazing) and the view of the mountains breathtaking. The staff were very friendly and helpful with information. We had a steak dinner in the hotel bistro (reasonably good) and enjoyed in a friendly atmosphere. The morning breakfast was fantastic .. help yourself to cereal, fruits, toast etc and orders taken for hot food cooked to your liking all eaten in pleasant surroundings (appropriate music softly played was a nice touch). On checkout we picked up our lift passes and it was a real treat going up the mountain and looking over the village and it's surrounds. There's a lot of history with the hotel and Thredbo in general and we were rapt in our short visit here. We fully intend to come back in the near future and stay here again and this time, hopefully, reach the top of Mount Kosciuszko. Just because it's summer doesn't mean there's not much to do in Thredbo .. far from it. Highly recommend Thredbo and Thredbo Alpine Hotel!

Room Tip: Upstairs room close to the back door makes for easy carriage of luggage from the car.

“Great position”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

I stayed at the hotel earlier this month with my wife and friends from the USA.

It is in a great position to access the chairlift up the mountain as well as all the facilities of Thredbo Village.

The rooms and bathrooms are small, but you are not there to sit in the room - you are there to go out and enjoy what Thredbo has to offer.

It has lots of atmosphere and is so typical Thredbo - please don't change it.

Would definitely recommend it - there are some good offers during summer.

Room Tip: Ground floor has less steps to climb

“Don't stay here”

We recently spent one night in this hotel. It was built in the early 60's, and apparently nothing has been done to the accommodation since then. The room was small with depressing pine panelling. The bathroom was small with seemingly the original fittings. There seems to be no provision for the disabled, which I find surprising. The breakfast was horrible. An awful place.

Room Tip: I asked to be moved to a better room and was told that they are all the same!

Dear Maureen056,

I am dissapointed that you were not satisfied with your experience. This alpine hotel, built with an alpine chalet style feel to it with wood paneling and a cozy warm atmosphere was built in the 60's and has had many upgrades over the year, including most recently, new carpet throughout and new flat screen TV's. Every Summer we have a comprehensive maintenance and improvement schedule which this year involves, painting, new lamps, replacing some beds, replacing tiles and grouting in some bathrooms as needed. We will also be re-surfacing and painting the swimming pool, painting the bars and restaurants with 2 outlets already being completed, upgrading some heating units to ensure more effective and efficient heating and many other improvements. I can also tell you that when the hotel was designed and built in the 60's there was no provision for disabled access, however we do have some retro fitted disabled friendly rooms that do have access from the back entrance for disabled guests. However as they are not specifically designed for use by disabled persons we do not advertise this.

Thanks again for your feedback, every comment is useful to us when working to improve our offering for our valued guests.

“Expensive for what it is, but it's Thredbo....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

Have stayed here a number of times over the years, most recently this month. Personally, I love that it's not wall to wall slickness - I like its faded 60s ski resort glam, but understand that for those not familiar with the feel of the early days of Australian skiing, it must seem a bit shabby.

It is poor value if considered against hotels in standard places, but this not a standard place, even out of season, so bearing this in mind, I think it justifies its price. I think in fact, the hotel is the only place in the quiet season where you can stay just for one night (others that are open require min 2 or 3night stays). You could stay down at Jindabyne for a lot less, but there is something special about being up amongst the snow gums.We stayed in a Terrace room, which has a sunny terrace overlooking the slopes. Comfortable, if not luxurious. In good weather, Thredbo is a good destination for a relaxing few days of walking, tennis, fishing, or just chilling.

My only real gripe is availablility of decent, affordable food. This trip we travelled without our 3 teenagers and so eating at the very good (but too expensive for 5 people) Cascades was fine. However when they are with us, we stay in Jindabyne where food options are more varied. The only option, other than Casades, is the pub bistro (at the Thredbo A.H.)and it's really dreadful (and we eat in a lot of clubs) - the atmosphere, food quality and selection is very poor. I am told it's the same chef in each of the T.A.H. restaurants so don't understand why the bistro is this way. If it was better, we would stay at Thredbo when the kids are with us too, so the Hotel misses out - and I'm sure, talking to others, we are not the only ones making this choice.

Also, speaking about Thredbo generally (not the Hotel), we were told (by Thredbo information line) that the Kosciuszko walk was 'closed' last week. We almost didn't come to Thredbo at all because of this advice. However looking at the webcams, thought we would chance it and see how far we could safely walk. Having enjoyed a beautiful Spring walk on a cloudless day to the summit of Mt K, we were joined by at least 50 others at the top of Australia....what's with the 'closed' advice? I can understand that caution is needed to make the walk, but telling people in an officious tone that it's 'closed' is just not true.

Room Tip: There is no lift in the three level hotel; however if you don't mind stairs, 3rd floor terrace r...

Dear sasanqua,

Thanks for your review. I am pleased that you appreciate the character and charm our alpine hotel, set amongst the snowgums. It truely does have a alpine feel and tranquility to it, especially during the low season. I apologise that the Pub menu does not meet you tastes, the menu is designed to be a simple pub meal in comparison to the many other restaurants in Thredbo that offer full a la carte style food similar to Cascades as you have mentioned. The Pub & Bistro was one of the most dined in establishments this winter season with many guests prefferring this simple menu option. Of course all feedback is good feedback and with a new menu on the schedule for December we will endevour to offer a more rounded menu for the summer season. Inregards to the information that the Kosi walk was closed, the hotel does not operate this information line, however it should be noted that the walks are managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service and the information that the information line gives out is based on the advice from the Parks and Wildlife Service who obviously deemed that the walk to the top of Kosi should be closed at that time of year either due to safety or to protect native vegetation in a vulnerable time of year. Of course some people do not choose to follow those instructions, but the information line must offer information based on this.

Thanks again for your review.
