We've stayed at Horizons at least 6 times over the years and we've watched in dismay as it has crumbled to the depths in what was once quality accommodation in Port Stephens.
Before it was sold off to overseas interests, it was a fabulous golf course - deep green carpets for fairways and a reliable restaurant. The villas were near new and everything worked. 10 years on and how things have changed, including the owners. The whole place went broke and they laid off most of the staff, including the greenskeepers. What a huge mistake. Once the golf course lost it's lustre, it stopped being a venue for anything other than buck's weekends and sleazy group bookings that have nothing to do with golf. Half the condos are now in private hands so you can't book through reception. Our regular villa (105) now looks like the owners have just thrown in furniture they didn't want in their own home. Room service is unreliable, the villa entrances are always strewn with decaying leaf matter, the once lush landscaping is twiggy and parched and the golf course is run on such a budget that it is an insult to pay the green fees. I'm not even going to mention the pool that closed over summer to save money. What a joke. Even the front signage looks cheap.
Our memories of waking to the currawongs and sipping coffee on the balcony of our 2 storey villa overlooking the practice green, are memories only. We won't ever stay at Horizons again.
What a shame for Port Stephens.
