We stayed at Sponars in 2009 and again in 2010 for our annual family ski trip of 4 days and 3 nights for 2 adults and 2 children. Sponars is in an excellent location about 7km or 5 minute drive from Perisher inside the Kosciusko National Park (park fees are payable) with a large car park. Remember chains are required in winter for non 4wd vehicles and we needed to use ours during the stay.
Now let’s be honest, Sponars isn’t the Hilton – it is good honest, but basic accommodation located very close to the ski fields that in my opinion is excellent value for money. In the past I have stayed in other locations and paid a lot more for a lot less.
The rooms are basic - we stayed in a standard quad which had a double bed and two singles with an ensuite. There is a storage area for cloths and tea/coffee making facilities, heater (which we didn’t need to use and it got down to -4C) and no TV. There is not much space but hey it’s only for sleeping.
There was no mobile phone coverage which in my opinion is a good reason to come back (no interruptions from work). They do have an internet kiosk if you must stay connected.
Sponars operated a bus run every day between the chalet and the Perisher ski fields so you don’t have to drive. Each night we stayed a kids club was available. Our kids went on one of the nights and had a great time watching a movie, playing Wii and drawing. Otherwise they stayed and ate with us.
The food (breakfast and dinner was included in our tariff) was good quality and quantity. I would describe it as good home style cooking – which is need with all the kilojoules you burn off when skiing. They offered soup, dinner roll with a choice of three mains (always one vegetarian option) with dessert.
Sponars has a good bar with a variety of beers, wines and spirits at reasonable prices. The bar area with multiple lounges and places to sit back and relax, maybe in front of the fire or watching one of the two TV’s, playing pool, darts or pinball or maybe just striking up a conversation with other like minded skiers.
The pool and steam room were enjoyed by the grown-ups and kids each day after skiing. There is nothing better than splashing around in a heated pool with Snow on the ground outside. And yes the corridor connecting the pool to the Chalet is very cold. They do charge a few dollars for extra pool towels.
Ski hire is also available at good prices and we received great service.
Outside there is a basic children’s play ground and if you’re lucky (which we were) snow on the ground to build a snowman – they even gave us a shovel to use to build him and don’t forget to check out the fountain in the lake.
The service from the owners and their staff was great.
We will stay again and I would recommend Sponars to anyone.
