“Modern and friendly”

This near-new motel in Hay was definitely a real surprise. As you would expect, the rooms are new and very clean. But it is also very well appointed with quality fixtures and fittings. Ultra-modern with neutral tones - nice change to the usual 80's decore and smelly pillows! I had a standard double room, with comfortable queen bed, large flatscreen tv, split air-conditioning, sofa chair, dining table and kitchenette. Excellent twin blinds - one for privacy and one to blockout. Outfront was a table and two chairs looking across the road to fields and the sunset. The room faced the front, so overlooked the highway, but set well back from the road. Yes, it can be noisy outside, but in the room it is much quieter than what you would expect, plus the highway is hardly what you would call busy. No motel on a highway is going to be 100% quiet! Also, the internal walls are lined with soundproofed gyprock instead of bare brick walls like you usually find in similar motels. So I did sleep well. As I was travelling alone, I had room-service rather than go the restaurant. Food is in large portions and was excellent and well worth the money (I had chicken breast with honey soy sauce and vegetables). Minibar is reasonably priced (Crown Lager for $6 which is the same price as my local pub). The owner is a lovely filopino lady who is very friendly and outgoing. I have to say I was impressed with this motel and will come back whenever I pass through Hay!

“A restful place to stay at great value with a great restaurant.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

I stayed overnight to break my trip from Bathurst to Mildura.I like to stay in a motel with a restaurant when traveling,so it was a surprise to find the Bishops Lodge had such a high quality menu.I had the Pork Belly topped with Scollops entree as a main, yum.
The room was clean, refreshing and I did not notice any highway noise even though I was in a front room.
The owners were friendly and provided excellent service.
I was looking for a Motel with a restaurant in Hay and even though it took a little to find the motel a little out of Hay on the Narrandera road it was worth the effort.

“Great family rooms, shame about the Highway traffic noise.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

We only stayed one night here, as a stop over from Broken Hill to Jindabyne. The front part of the motel has been rebuild after a fire in January 2010 and was re-opened in April 2011.We were travelling with 2 of our 3 teenage children (14 & 15). We had booked a family room, which was lovely. Very modern. Very clean and comfortable. There is a separate bedroom with 2 single beds for the children, no cupboard. There was a kitchenette with crockery, cutlery, kettle, microwave, toaster, tea towel and a sink. However. there was no plug for the sink, detergent or washing up liquid. Even though the room was lovely, it was right at the front of the motel. The last room before the highway. This is a major highway between Sydney and Adelaide. I am a light sleeper and I did not sleep very well, because of the truck noise during the night. All the family rooms seem to be in this wing of the motel. They should have put soundproofing in the rooms to stop the traffic noise, when they rebuilt.
The owners were friendly and helpful. We did not eat at the motel restaurant, even though the food smelled nice and the menu looked good, nothing appealed to our fussy eater. Instead, went to one of the bistros in town, where we had a lovely country style meal. When we first got to the motel all the tv stations were working, but after dinner only the local tv stations were working. (Not really a problem for us). Found out the next day that the whole town didn't have satelite tv the previous night, so it must go out on a regular basis, a previous reviewer mentioned this too. Not sure if we would stay here again, only because of the highway noise at night.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the Motel, hopefully you will avoid the highway traffic noise.

“newly refurbished, old hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

The rooms have been cheaply but nicely refurbished in what looks to be a standard 70's style roadside motel. The room (at the back) was basically clean and okay. We saw a room at the front that was a little nicer but $180 instead of $160 (Christmas holiday peak season) but it was late and we didn't need the separate sitting room. We just needed a bed for the night so went with the cheaper option. Most the TV stations didn't work (they said the satellite dish was down) but we eventually found a station to drown out the noise coming from the fighting and crying baby next door.

After reaching Hay and consulting tripadvisor on my mobile we would have stayed somewhere else but it was late and everything else was full.

The Chinese couple that owns the place seem nice and are probably good cooks as the food coming from the kitchen smelled great. Room service is available till 10pm.

Room Tip: The rooms at the front furthest from the reception are a little bigger (separate bedroom and sitting...

The Bishops Lodge Motor Inn was originally built in the late 1980s. In January 2010, the front part of the motel including the restaurant and kitchen was burnt down and has been rebuilt since May 2011. Since its reconstruction, the motel has been refurbished with modern décor to qualify with its AAA 4-Star rating. Unfortunately, we could not prevent the transition from analogue to digital frequency changes on Free-to-Air television that were made in the Hay region during the guest’s stay. It is also beyond our control if there are unsettled children at the motel, especially during the holiday season. We would kindly like to invite the guest to stay another night with us and dine in our restaurant and enjoy our award winning chef’s highly praised cuisine.

Thank you

“Stay if you like new rooms otherwise the service was average.”

Lady was friendly when we made the booking en-route to Hay. On checkin I asked if they had any rooms at the back in which she said they didn't but afterwards I noticed they did but not sure if they were unavailable. As we arrived late from Sydney we slept in. Ten mins before check out time the host came by to tell us to leave. He refused to even give us half an hour to pack up insisting check out was at 10. We didn't leave until about 10:30 but the host didn't come back.

The rooms are new. Bed medium firm. Pillows firm. Sheets and towels clean. Spider web in the corner of the room. The newness makes it a nice place to stay but I wonder whether it will be well maintained and clean as it ages.

If you want a new place, recommend it. Trucks can be heard in rooms facing highway even with the windows closed. It's not too bad in the early hours.

Service was average.
