We had two one night stays at the Saltbush in Sept/October 2009 Staying in the same family room on each occassion. Rated 4 stars the property is quite new and well furbished and fresh smelling without perfume as you would expect.
The family room is one large room with queen and two singles. It also has a small kitchenette area with full sized sink, crockery for four, a kettle and toaster. Microwave ovens can be obtained from reception.
We found we had an electric blanket on the queen but not the single beds during our stay, so if it's cold you might want to check about this when booking or immediately on check in. There is a guest laundry with powder supplied.
Saltbush provides free broadband access which we successfully accessed on both stops. When necessary cables are available from reception if for some reason you aren't able to connect through wireless. If you are travelling without a laptop there is an internet kiosk at reception for guest use.
Only real issue I had was that the bar fridge although new, was of a variety that the little freezer could not take my 2 litre milk bottle ice blocks. It was a very small freezer only capable of handling ice trays or one or two of those blue (and fairly useless) freezer blocks. I am no expert on bar fridges and what is currently on the market but this was the one flaw in an excellent new accommodation spot which otherwise seems to have thought of everything.
I booked directly with the motel and found them easy to deal with and efficient.
The location is right in the main street of Hay right in the "action" so to speak. Excellent food options within walking distance. We ate at Wok on Hay and were very impressed with the cleanliness of the place. They have a range of options, from thai, pizza, traditional hamburgers that looked good as we saw others getting them. You can eat in or take away and there is a big TV you can watch while you wait or eat. Handy when it's grand final night as it was when we where there.
I would say it is very hard to go past the Saltbush when staying a night or two in Hay which is a lovely little town with plenty of things to see and do both in town and in areas surrounding for a few relaxing days.
