“Disappointing, checked out and didn't stay the night”

Booked in advance to stay here for one night on return from Durham to Cheshire, guided by good reviews on this website. We chose it as somewhere we could eat/drink/stay all in one convenient location. There was no explanation on arrival that no food was available due to the chef having broken his leg (not his fault I know but not helpful when we'd picked this place specifically for the fact that it served food!!) - we only found out by asking at the bar after being shown our room for the night. We couldn't fault the room - very clean and well-stocked with coffee/tea & biscuits and those helpful little "extras" like shower gel and shampoo, however it was very hot even with the window open (it was a very hot day though so I suppose that's not really a fair comment)! We didn't want to drive out to get food because that would have meant my husband couldn't have a few drinks and although we were told lots of pubs in the vicinity served food, we discovered that this was not the case on a Saturday night!!! The whole area seemed very rundown and the pubs a little "seedy". Hence we made the decision to checkout and return home that night - a 3-hour drive which wasn't too bad as the road were very quiet late at night!Fortunately my husband had had only 1 drink and we hadn't paid in advance for our room - in fact we hadn't used any of the items in the room nor even unpacked!. All very disappointing but maybe we were just unlucky on this occasion and we would have been very satisfied if we'd been able to eat there.

“Great place, friendly people, great prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 June 2010

Came across Ye Olde Star inn by accident whilst looking for a room after a meeting. The staff were all very friendly and Shane the landlord was very acommodating. The rooms were spacious and clean, the food was excellent in both price and quality, and locals were all very friendly. The huge carpark had CCTV which is always a bonus in a strange place.
We arrived quite late, and were very hungry, and although the kitchen had closed 2 hours earlier, the landlord fired everything up again to make us all a decent meal.
The menu is made up of good pub grub, nothing too fancy and nothing overly expensive. I look forward to the next stay there.

“An OK stay!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2008

Stayed for one night here. This is a very 'olde worlde' style inn with lots of dark wood and horse brasses on display. This makes the bar area very dark. All the staff and locals were very friendly, and this is clearly a place with 'regulars'. The accommodation was spacious with a large en-suite bathroom, which was very clean and had plenty of towels and products. There was a well stocked tea/coffee tray and even a fridge for those who might require it. Plenty of drawers and hanging space if needed. The bed however, was uncomfortable and very creaky! Also, as a non-smoker, the smell of smoke drifting from other guest rooms was a bit unpleasant. Enjoyed an excellent cooked breakfast the following day, served to order with plenty of juice, tea and coffee. As the hotel is situated at the top of the old main street, there was loads of choice of eating establishments, all nationalities, within a five minute walk. There is a private car park to the hotel. I felt this was a perfectly acceptable overnight stay for the price £35.00, and was made to feel very welcome.

“loved the food!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2008

i stayed at the ye olde star inn in aril this year, from the moment i got there i knew it was the right choice to stay in. the food was excellent, there was lots to choose from for breakfast cooked how you like it. they also do sunday lunch so if your staying over the weekend make sure that you stay for lunch, you wont regret it. the rooms are nice, not much to see from the windows but they were cleaned every day. the atmosphere is really friendly and its easy to make firends with the locals and the bar staff. ovral i think that it was a really good stay.
