“One of the worst hotels I've ever stayed at!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I have just stayed two nights at the Grand Plaza Hotel. This is my first visit to Toledo and I was there for two nights. I travel for business and pleasure, and I have about 200 hotel stays a year, so I have a lot to compare this hotel against.

The man at the front desk could use some customer service skills. The lobby is very outdated, but it sounds like it has been recently updated, so they should get a refund from their interior designer. I don't understand having to use the keycard in the elevator, especially for lower floors, and you have to run the card about 5 times before you get a green light. The elevator is awful looking and needs some serious updating. Once I got into my room, I noticed how dark and cold it was. I immediately found the thermostat to increase the heat and the panel was barely attached to the wall. The thermostat was at 68 degrees....in winter! I set the thermostate at 75 to get warm quickly, and 36 hours later, it has not gone above 70 degrees. I have seen review after review regarding the HVAC unit, going as far back as 2010, so obviously this hotel does not care to fix this problem. The lighting in the bathroom is minimal and I could barely see to put makeup on....it was just way to dim!

I found the staff to be unfriendly except for the guys at valet. I don't think the hotel was highly occupied, so I was able to get my car quickly each time and they were polite and helpful. The fitness center is one of the worst I've seen. Broken machines, heater blasting, and very poor lighting...why would you keep the fitness center with lounge lighting? Overall, I was extremely disappointed in this hotel and I will never stay here again. I'm not sure why anyone would have been pleased with this hotel...I can only assume they don't stay in hotels very often and therefore have lower standards.

Room Tip: Don't even stay here.

“Cheap room, valet $16.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The room was clean, I'm guessing around 500 sq. ft. The room looked like it was unprofessionally updated. I went to sit in the lounge chair and it tilted back, one of the back legs was broken. After I straightened the leg and sat down, I noticed a dusty smell. The a/c unit was directly behind the chair, I removed the cover and took out the most dust filled air filter I have ever seen. The was no visibility through the filter. I called the front desk, because it was affecting our breathing, with-in 15 minutes a new filter arrived. Besides these hiccups, it was a comfortable stay. This may have been the quietest room we have ever stayed in. We never heard a noise until the next morning, when house keeping was making their sweeps. We really liked the bar/restaraunt in the basement level. We had a chance to have drinks before and after an event at the Huntington Center, (which is within walking distance, even though the temperature was in the teens). The appetizer was good, and the staff were very friendly. The hotel probably was very nice before the economy went south. The basement level has small mall with just a few tenants left, and underground access to bus stop. Being on the river is always nice. We will be staying again, this time waiting until the summer to see Toledo's triple a baseball team, that is also with-in walking distance. A good choice for $85 for a Saturday night, but $16 for valet is something you pay for in bigger cities.

“Great staff struggling to make an old building work ...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

This is one where you just hate to say anything negative because it's obvious the hotel is hurting, struggling to make a go of it, and all the staff are SO exceptionally friendly and anxious to meet your every need. But it's an old building, there isn't always hot water, the ceiling in our room (11th floor) poured in rain when it rained (we had to keep a stack of towels underneath), the ac/heat doesn't work properly so our friends froze in their room while we couldn't get our room below 80 degrees ... Things like that. The elevators consistently stall, skip floors, open between floors, stuff like that. They finally shut down one of the three elevators because it stopped working entirely. So ... You get the picture. An old building. But like I say, the staff is really great and all you have to do is let them know there's a problem and they are there to help. And - the best breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets - for an unbelievably low price - of any hotel we've been in, around the U.S. (and we're in a hotel at least 8 days each month, often 12.) So all in all we'd recommend staying here, as long as you have a little patience. Beautiful views, by the way. Wall-to-wall windows in the guest rooms, overlooking the river, iconic smokestacks, beautiful bridge, barges and birds floating along beneath you. Very moody and atmospheric.

“Wedding stay was adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

We stayed at this hotel recently with extended family for a wedding nearby. The rooms were clean and definitely adequate. I had stayed there previously when new as the Sofitel and later when it was a Wyndham. Obviously the bathrooms are a little dated but the lobby is very nice and one of our rooms was a suite with floor to ceiling windows which overlooked the river. It was beautiful and roomy with a bar and a large living room where we gathered after the festivities. I would stay there again as there is not much else in the Toledo downtown area and it is very reasonably priced. The breakfast buffet was not great and was the only thing available on the weekend. I'd definitely pass on that. Also, the valet parking was a disaster on Saturday night. Several of the guests called for their cars a half hour before needed and they still were not up in time to get to the wedding. They missed the processional!! There is a wonderful museum next to the hotel which had children's exhibits and something for adults. There is not anything else in the walkable area on weekends.

Room Tip: The suites overlooking the water are beautiful with a spacious living room and floor to ceiling wind...

Thank you for choosing to stay with us. We here at the Grand Plaza Hotel Downtown Toledo realize that you have many choices to stay elsewhere while in our fare city.
I noticed that you commented that there is little to do within walking distance on the weekends while visiting Toledo. While we are connected to Imagination Station, we are within walking distance of the Huntington Center. This facility has hosted many top-of-the-line acts in the very few years it has been open. I would also invite you to visit us during the summer while the Triple A Detroit Tigers affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens are in season. Adult tickets are under $10, and it is a very affordable venue to catch a game with your family. Of course our shuttle can also drop you off if it is available.
I also would like to apologize for any inconvenience that you and your group may have incurred in regards to our valet service. The evening you stayed with us was a very busy one with many people not only entering our facility for a wedding, but also leaving for a different reception, all at the same time. Again, I apologize and invite you to stay with us again in the near future.

All the best,
Brandon West

“Pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

I was staying in Toledo on business and found the accommodations to be very comfortable and the employees to be friendly and professional The lobby and restaurant area have a nice contemporary look. Breakfast and lunch appeared to be all buffet-- they seemed to be refreshing food a lot, and there was a good variety. Lunch was a good value.

We used the "boardrooms" and they were very large and comfortable; catering service was good and it was convenient to have a bathroom right in the conference room area.

One thing I'll note is that the elevators seem out of repair; they do not reopen upon closing on something (or someone), require the use of key cards, make disturbing noises and have jerky/slow movement. Also, we arrived with a ton of boxes and bags, and the valet watched while we loaded them ourselves, then offered to help as we were nearly done. One of the reviewers from October noted that parking was free, but there was a nightly charge for me.

We are glad to hear that our meeting space was more than adequate for you. Many people also comment on our very popular Lunch Buffet. We get many people coming from many local companies daily just to enjoy lunch.
I apologize that our elevators did not function to your satisfaction. We do require the usage of your hotel room key-card to activate our elevators. We do so as to limit the access of anyone who would not be a guest of the hotel. While this may be inconvenient, please understand that we do place our guests safety at a premium.
Also, I noticed your comment regarding your parking charges. Most people that stay with us do incur a parking charge, unless they may be staying with a company or group that has temporarily negotiated a different rate.
Thank you for your comments,
