“Nice place, not perfect, nice access to lake, good option for lakefront activities”
Keep in mind that many of the reviews on here are for the cottages, and not the lodge. I stayed in both recently. I got a package which included geocaching and smores. I was with small children and the geocaching got boring fast. We couldn't find the object we were looking for. Even the staff said some were hard to find. It seemed like a waste of time so we just walked the wilderness boardwalk. Unfortunately, we didn't see many birds but the walk was nice. The smores package included a box which had graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. It also included wooden roasting sticks (which may burn), a bundle of firewood, and a fire starter. There was already a fire going and some wood was provided in one of the two fire pits. I ended up taking my bundle of wood home. There was another fire pit on the western part of the resort in which I started a fire, only to have the sprinkler system come on and make us leave. The other pit was fine though. Metal roasters were also provided there.
The lodge room inside was clean enough. The balcony though had spiderwebs and debris all over it. It should be cleaned as well. Taking a broom and knocking off some of the debris would have made a nice difference. The balcony had a nice view of Lake Erie as I had a lakeview room. We could not see the sunset from ours because we were on the eastern side and a building was blocking us.
The ground floor seemed nice in some ways because you can walk to many of the outdoor resort amenities right from your patio door. The outdoor pool was nice and enjoyable. The indoor pool has some fountains in it for kids. All of the indoor recreation is located in one cramped area. There is an indoor playground, the pool, a video arcade, and the racquetball course. This area was full of people, many of them children. It would not be too pleasant if you did not have children, and was packed because everything is in such a small area. One of the racquetball courts seemed to always have wallyball going. A nearby part of the lobby showed a movie every night which a lot of people seemed to watch. I personally don't get the point of going to a resort like that and sitting there and watching a movie, but that's just me I guess. The waterfront on the resort is large concrete steps, but there is a beach a little further down.
I ate breakfast at the resort two days. The prices were reasonable (about the same as Bob Evans). The room service menu was the same as the restaurant menu. The food was average. I did send back a cold order of biscuits and gravy the second day.
I also ate a couple of meals that were catered for a large group. They were ok, very typical bland mass-produced hotel food.
I found the cottage to be decent as well. The bedrooms were nice. The cottage I was in had a room with four beds (two bunks), two rooms upstairs with one bed in each, and a master bedroom with 1 bed. The master bedroom had a safe, cabinet, and access to outside. We also had a rollaway bed. There was a TV and space to hang out. There are not really views of anything other than some trees.
Overall, this is a nice resort that has a view of the lake. The rooms are fine. There are activities for children. The main drawbacks for me were the dirty balcony and the concentration of children to pass through when walking from my room to the lobby. Also, they charge for Wi-Fi.
