“The Perfect Base of Operations for "Funcoast Foodies"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

If you have an interest in food and find yourself on the north shores of Ohio, then the best place to rest up between meals is Captain Montagues. The hospitality of the Tann's is exceptional. For a couple that was looking for a retirement condo.....(well, there was a last minute change of plan), they have shown so much TLC to this landmark. For suggestions on places to walk and hike, to where the best restaurants as well as an exceptional breakfast, the Tann's have you covered. It feels like home the second you pass through the door and it is a bit sad to leave at the end of your stay.

“Beauty and warmth on a cold winter's night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

My daughter and I spent one night after Christmas to see the lake, eat at Mon Ami, and hike the nearby scenic spots. We stayed at Captain Montague's and were enchanted. Everything was lovely: our room (Molly's, made into twin beds), the hosts Judy and Mike, the breakfast, and the interior of the house (as well as the outside). So much refinement and tasteful consideration has gone into every aspect of this B&B. Our room was on the first floor, so I peeked into the upstairs rooms and found each room delightful. I loved walking down the grand staircase and eating in the dining room with the beautiful features. Before we left, we began a conversation with our hosts, and I found out that at one time Mike lived in the same cottage that my family had for several years beforehand! We learned so much about Huron, its history and its present, just by having a nice talk. We recommend Captain Montague's at any time of the year, although amid all the gorgeous Christmas decorations, we think that December is a fine time to come!

“Destination for food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

We've made it a habit to see Mike and Judy at least once a year, not only for the food and hospitality, but because it works so well for the wonderful food opportunities close by. Driving 60 miles from Cleveland to Chez Francois and back, one of the best restaurants - if not THE best - in Ohio, can be a problem, especially after a full meal and some wine. Captian Montague's is hands down the best place to stay in the area.

AND, most recently, we attended a wonderful event (second time there) at the Culinary Vegetable Institue in Milan, which is no more than 10 miles south of Huron. Farmer Jones puts on a meal every month with a different chef, someone who is a the top of his or her game, to show off the unique items grown at CVI. These are really great parties in a very friendly, warm environment that are not only offer great food (same veggies you get at Chez Francois), but great theater, as well. The chefs go all out to strut their stuff, and like last Saturday, it was a real show: bubbles, bagpies, floating fish, cotton candy.

if you some and stay when you go to Chez, you ought to do the same for CVI.

And of course, all of the positive comments about Catpain Montagues hold true: we always feel welcome, the food is great, the accomodations comfortable and affordable. We tell everyone we know to go.

“Our yearly escape...”

With all due respect to the review titled "An average B&B" from kmcCleveland_Ohio - Captain Montague's Bed and Breakfast, and its hosts, Mike and Judy, provide an experience that is anything but average.

Sixteen years ago, I was a new mom who was taking her first time away since the birth of my son. My husband and I chose the Captain's on the recommendation of a magazine review. We drove over four hours during the New Year's holiday to experience our first bed and breakfast.

And since that time, no other bed and breakfast has measured up to the kindness and hospitality (not to mention the fabulous food!) that Mike and Judy provide.

We, as a couple, made a commitment to "escape" to the Captain's at least once a year. And we have, by and large, kept that commitment - having just concluded our 16th wonderful visit this past weekend.

We have stayed in every room (but one - because it has always been booked whenever we visit!) - and most of them at least twice. We have watched, as over the the years, Judy and Mike have tranformed this grand old house into a spectacular showplace, that although beautiful, is homey and inviting. Each year, as we would return, a new room or area had been re-fashioned and reborn, making the Captain's a true "step back in time." If we had a question about where something might be located (i.e. an extra fan or pillows or blankets in the closet), Mike and Judy have always been more than accomodating.

One of the most memorable parts of each trip is the spectacular breakfasts that await us each morning. Judy puts such love into the preparation of the food she serves...with our favorite being the Captain's signature scones. Respectful of dietary needs and other accomodations, Mike and Judy do an outstanding job of making us feel at home - treating us like family yet still respecting our privacy.

Each visit we try and discover something new (which is getting more challenging the more times we visit). Judy has always gone above and beyond an "average innkeeper" and provided us with inspiring ideas on how we can tap into our sense of adventure and experience the beauty of the area.

I find Mike and Judy's warmth, hospitality and tireless energy to be unique and I highly recommend not only that you take the time to experience the magic of stepping back in time at the Captain's, but that you get to know its innkeepers - who truly complete our special experience, each and every time we visit.

We are looking forward to our 17th visit!

“Charming place close to attractions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

We very much enjoyed our stay and the great hospitality of Judy and her husband. Breakfast was excellent and Judy's brownies a soft and tasteful seduction at night. The interior of the house is most distinctive and reflects the effort and devotion of the owners to make this an unforgettable place. We were treated like friends! An excellent choice to stay, if you want to be close to attractions, but not next door.
