On the mainland of Australia, they tell you the terrible truth... it is unlikely that you will see a platypus outside of an animal sanctuary of some sort. They are nocturnal, aquatic and very shy. Then you arrive in Tasmania where you are far more likely to see one. Then you arrive a Cambridge House, where you see them anytime you walk down to the creek that runs next to the house. A wonderful opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures.
This would be a B&B you'd want to visit even if there were no fanciful, ancient creature waiting for you. We stayed three nights and I could easily have stayed longer. Cambridge House is spotlessly clean, well appointed, and very comfortable. Bathroom facilities are large, come with lots of big fluffy towels, a heated towel rack, and everything you need.
Karen and Glenn are the hosts and work to ensure that your stay a good one. Glenn is the cook and prepares a huge and very tasty breakfast. It is ample in all ways. They are knowledgeable about the area and happy to share their wisdom.
If you are a hiker, you'll need a good breakfast. There is very good hiking in the area. We particularly loved the short hike (45 minutes, unless you take as many photographs as I did) at the top of Hartz Mountain. It is an alpine rainforest and as beautiful a place as one will ever see & it is nearly deserted. Take a rain jacket & a fleece as the weather changes quickly. The Huon Valley is beautiful and Cambridge House is a quality place from which to wander around.
