“Overnight stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Stayed on A Saturday evening as we were going to a retirement party close by. Looks nice from the outside and you have to go through secure gates to get in to grounds.
Staff were friendly on reception, Friday to Sunday they do not serve food only breakfasts as used for private functions.
Rooms large with an extra single bed, the kettle was dirty and dusty, which was the only thing that let it down.
Breakfast self service, which was fresh and piping hot and a good selection of fresh fruit and cereals.
Ideal for business or private one night stay.

“Average hotel - jury is out - Felt safe for solo female traveller”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

I stayed for one night after being in Cannock for business during the day.

As other reviewers have noted this hotel is basic, has its faults, but for me as the title suggests, felt safe and secure and I am really not sure at all!!

Likes:
Secure entry and parking: I have a lovely car and I want it and me to be safe over night
Free WiFi
Feeling comfortable when alone and dining or having a drink in the bar: Lots of solo business people but with a " you know that I know attitude" that was most welcoming.
Lots of ashtrays and places to sit outside: Being a smoker can be taken as an extreme negative by some establishments.
Dinner menu and service: A very good rib eye steak at a very reasonable price. The specials looked good too. The waitress was very pleasant and efficient.
The Grounds: Very peaceful and full of rabbits and horses... if you are staying at the back of the hotel. If the hotel has rooms to the front overlooking the A5 there may be a different perspective!

Dislikes
Room: Very institutational - was very dusty and looked as if no one had stayed in it for many a month. The advice sheet one receives at check in says "ring 0 from the phone in your room for further assistance etc". there was no phone in the room! The TV was switched off at the mains. The mirrors clearly had been cleaned but not very well and were smeary. No milk on the hospitality tray but OK I dont take milk. Very basic toiletries but OK I took my own. Spare pillows (above the clothes hanging space) looked as if they had been used previously - not OK did not take my own!

General:
Check out was effieicient but I was not asked if i had been comfortable or had enjoyed my stay.
Breakfast was of a reasonable choice, however nothing from the hot plate or cold selection was refreshed. Overhearing another conversation " they are short staffed on a Tuesday, one can usually order for breakfast too." Thank goodness for the crumpets ( a very rare find) and juice I say.!

My jury is really out on this one. I can see from the surroundings that the hotel potentially offers very nice communal facilites and cuisine for weddings, functions and conferences etc. so is this their "bread and butter?" There is clearly a great deal of repeat or long term weekday stays so is this the "jam on their bread and butter?" The staff are truly multi skilled, check in staff serve you in the bar/restaurant later and so on. If they sorted the house keeping would it be good? Would I stay again? I am hung on these too but I guess I will try again next time I am in the area.

“Average Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2010

Overall average hotel

Only stayed 1 night. Room stayed in was basic, although large and with wireless. Room could do with a bit more modernisation.

“Awful place - I will stay else where next time!”

We stayed here for one night as we were meant to be attending a meeting the next day in the local area. The meeting was cancelled due to snow, so we called asking to move it to date the next meeting was and said we would pay extra if needs be - they said no. They would not budge and were so rude! So we travelled down (nearly crashed!!!) and pulled on to a very icy driveway. Waited several minutes for the staff to open the gates. We went in. The receptionist couldn't be bothered to look us in the face when he spoke to us, passed me the form and carried on talking to another member of staff. I work in a hotel as a receptionist - this is NOT good customer service & I wouldn't dream of doing that to a guest! Went to our rooms - we had requested them to be next door to each other...they couldn't have been further apart. Our room was cold and smelt like it hadn't been used for ages! (this was evident when we saw how much dust was around) and the other room we had was cold but didnt smell as bad as ours. We unpacked and looked for the phone to ring the other room...it was no where to be found, so off to find the other room then on our way to tea (we went to a carvery down the road it was lovely!) we asked about the phones - "oh there is a problem with them and we have taken them out of every room" Thanks for telling us on check in - NOT! We slept eventually and woke up to go down to breakfast, i think that was the one thing that was passable. But i would never stay here and never recommend it. There are other hotels in the area we will be trying out when we next go to cannock!
