“Friendly staff, nice food and good sleep”

Stayed here with my husband for the weekend to attend a friend’s wedding. The wedding was a lovely event and the staff were very helpful at catering to our every need for a very fussy crowd (if I do say so myself).
We were in a newly refurbished room which was very nice and clean and the breakfast the next day was lovely with a good choice. We also had Sunday lunch the next day which was very tasty with good quality ingredients and big portions. I also found time to visit the spa for a lovely relaxing massage which I would recommend as the girls were very nice and friendly and squeezed me in very last minute
Overall we had a pleasant stay with friendly staff, nice food and good sleep. We will stay here again

“Great stay, friendly service at a very reasonable price!!”

I stayed here before going to the Snow Patrol concert in the area. The hotel was above and beyond my expectations. My room was recently refurbished and the staff were helpful in arranging a taxi to the metro radio arena.
Breakfast was great and overall I would definitely come back to this hotel when I next visit the north east!

“Cold rooms and cold restuarant”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Stayed for 1 night for matinee theatre in Sunderland and glad it was only 1. As I am a light sleeper I had requested an upper floor quiet room yet we were allocated a lower floor room. The receptionist admitted she had no idea of the layout of the rooms as regards quiet rooms and after two more changes we were finally allocated a quiet 1st floor room. It was a cold day with snow forecast but when we got to the room it was freezing as the radiator hadn't been turned up. Due to the snow and ice we couldn't go out so had to go to the hotel restaurant which was again freezing and were told the heating wasn't working; when I asked if they had a heater there was no response. It is supposed to be a 3* hotel and we have cold weather in England in winter so they should cater for that ! The restaurant menu was dated 3 days ago although we were told todays menu would be printed after 2,00pm. Although the main meal was good the the cheesecake was stale, obviously 3 days old ! The bed was ridiculously soft (haven't slept on such a bad mattress for over 25 years) that I ended up sleeping on the floor and I don't suffer from back problems normally. Although advertised, we could not get Wi Fi in the bedroom or reception area. Swimming pool was cold and dirty around the pool and involved a walk from the changing rooms on carpet, down stairs and through the gym to get to pool and no overshoes provided. Looking at the hotel porch from outside it looked very run down with rotten woodwork. Having had a great stay at another Mecure two weeks ago, it is obvious that standards are not consistent. I would never stay here again.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your feedback and I'm sorry to learn that your experience has not been as desired. With regards to your room the weather has been quite erratic. We have found that generally the rooms have been quite warm and so many radiator thermostats have been reduced to low. Of course guests have the option to adjust the thermostat to suit personal preferences.

I have also since checked the wifi and I can confirm that our wifi is fully operational in all areas bar a handful of rooms. I am pleased to say the remaining handful of rooms will have full wifi access within 14 days.

With regards to the swimming pool I can confirm that the pool is cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis and that the temperatures are set to the conforming 28 to 29 degrees level.

Once again many thanks for your valued feedback.

“Hell on earth!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Never have i had such a hideous experience in a hotel. My girlfriend and i wanted a little break and thought a night in a hotel may do us some good. Wow, how wrong i was. When we pulled up it looked like i had just entered dusseldorf with the cast of auf wiedersehh pet there! Bricks, mortar, hard hats and metal fences everywhere! Surely we must have the wrong place as this looked more like auschwitz! However, there it was, the sign saying george washington hotel. My girlfriend reassured me "maybe its better inside", i agreed but once again could not hide my disbelief at the old fashioned decor and lack of manners displayed by staff as we entered reception and the young girl had her phone out, texting under the counter. I breathed and tried to keep my blood pressure at a good level, however, once again when we entered the bar area later on, a woman that looked like a female manager was sitting with some guests telling the member of bar staff to bring drinks to her table when there was a clear queue at the bar! This really boiled my blood, as the female had not one bit of gratitude and looked as if the member of bar staff had just spat on her dog! Miserable to say the least! If that wasnt enough, i felt like i was in the gym every time i went to our room as the doors are like anvils! Its a good job i didnt notice any older frail guests as they may have been forever stuck in the hallway! The only good point i had was making a trip into the golf shop, good selection of stock and a cracking mannered very humerous young lad behind the desk, i think he was called james or josh or something. Anyway, his customer service was fantastic, but this was a glimmer of light in a very dark tunnel. The owner obviously doesnt have a clue, and needs to invest more into the golfing aspect. Go elsewhere!

Room Tip: go somewhere else

Dear Scott

Thank you for your feedback and I'm sorry to learn that your stay with us was not favourable.

There is a some building work along the long driveway of the hotel which is completely unrelated to the hotel and which is also entirely fenced off.

I'm sorry that you have had issues with a member of reception staff and this construction criticism helps greatly with further staff training.

I am surprised with views of decor. The hotel has undergone an extensive refurbishment programme compromising of the entire property.

On a positive note thank you for your comments regarding James in the golf club house as well as you kind words on golf stock. I will of course pass your kind words to the golf department.

“New Years Eve Family Event”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

A complete disaster, too many people packed into a room, we booked for 7 people, given a table for 6 with one standing. The meal; ran out of food half of 200 people waited one hour, then food for provided for the hungry 100, scraps, left over, pigs swill. Man blowing up Balloons for children ran out of time, many children stood waiting for an hour, did not receive a balloon. Management denied all this, even though they panicked and did not know what to do. We left seeking food at 10pm.
Out request for a refund ignored.

Dear Malcolm

Thank you for your review. As discussed with yourself there was delay with food however there is no question over the quality of food. There do seem to be some inaccuracies with statements made as discussed in correspondence sent to you.
