We stayed at the Selsdon for a wedding (though the wedding was not at the hotel, it was elsewhere). Our first impression was of a nice old building. When we booked in it was obvious that the staff were under pressure, what with 2 weddings, a 50th birthday party, golfers and guests checking in. We eventually found the old, rickety lift, more by accident than the rather obtuse instructions we were given.
The keys did not work and I had to trudge the considerable distance back down to get them 're-cut'.
The room itself was a good size (room 218) and had a nice view over the golf course. The decor, along with that of the entire hotel, needed attention (in fact the whole place could do with a complete re-fit). A broken window in the bathroom (covered with opaque plastic) and pubes in the bath (other guests had this too) did not improve the first impression.
After having an expensive drink at the bar we decided to retire to the room. (Way too many children in the bar, but then the 'Leisure Centre' does exit through the bar, complete with people dripping pool water everywhere).
We ordered some room service, two Eton Mess'. I was told that there would be a surcharge on top of the £7.50 each they were costing, but hey ho, it's room service. After an hour I had to call up and chase them up. I was told it was 2 minutes away. 15 minutes later it arrived. A few mini- meringues some Strawberries and mouldy tasting blueberries. Very unsatisfying.
When we returned to the hotel after returning from the wedding we were thankful to avoid the mayhem that was ensuing in reception as the world as his wife seemed to being checking in. At 0030. Typically then the keys did not work. Again. After my long trudge back to reception, a long wait and then a long trudge back, we got into the room.
A plus side was the breakfast, though I'd try and get the early-ish if you don't want to queue.
At the weekend, at least, it seems to be rammed with Weddings, parties and golfers. Let alone normal, everyday guests. The venue does not seem to be able to cope with a huge volume of people, or events without letting other parts of it's business suffer.
Oh and the jacuzzi was still not working.
