“I was treated like a friend rather than a guest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

Owners, Mr and Mrs Fisher, came out of the Guest House gate and warmly welcomed me as I stepped out of the car. This was a very nice touch as the gesture made it feel like I was visiting friends rather than simply arriving as a hotel guest. The room had everything you needed including a comfortable bed for a pleasant stay. The Guest House is tucked away from yet close enough to the charming town's amenities and rich, green countryside. I've stayed in hotels worldwide and have to declare that Mr Fisher's porridge is the best I've tasted. The only item that was missing in the room during the hot weekend of my stay was a fan - but then again, on reflection, if I asked my hosts I might have been given one. I look forward to staying here and indulging the creamy porridge once more later in the year.

“Everything was absolutely fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2010

As I said above, room, location, breakfast and service was all terrific. Will stay here again if we come to Uttoxeter. Really enjoyed our stay.

“I wouldn't recommend this establishment due to unhelpful attitude”

This has to be the most regimented, inflexible and visitor-unfriendly establishment we have ever stayed at.
We arrived on a Friday for a two night stay while attending a 3 day music festival nearby. First shock was the latest breakfast time of 8:30, which to me is far too early on a weekend, and earlier than anywhere else I've stayed at. Next you had to pre-order breakfast by completing a tick sheet as "it gets cooked in advance" being the reason given. A bit odd, but we can live with that if really necessary but we couldn't see why it was necessary. It was therefore something of a surprise the following morning to arrive bang on 8:30, then have to wait over 15 minutes for the cooked breakfast to arrive. Even I can cook a breakfast quicker than that from scratch so what happened to the cooked in advance I wondered.
After breakfast we left to look round the town and go to the music festival, returning around midnight. When we got up next morning we were told we couldn't have a cooked breakfast as we hadn't ordered anything. Nobody told us you had to order every day, we assumed that having ordered once that was it. When we enquired how, we were told order forms were left in the room. Upon returning to the room we found the forms which had been put in our room AFTER we left on Saturday, and they stated they had to be returned by 8pm, which was several hours before we returned, so it would have been impossible to do in our case without having to leave the music festival we had paid good money to attend just to go and order breakfast to fit it with the B&B owners. Any reasonably helpful people would have said, OK, we’ll cook you something, but no, we had to go without. They then claimed this had never happened before which I didn’t believe. To add insult to injury, instead of an offer of something off the price to make up for the fact we hadn’t had a cooked breakfast, they then attempted to overcharge my wife by £10. Bearing in mind we had paid the required deposit, and they must frequently book a double room out for 2 nights so must know exactly how much the balance should be, I find it difficult to believe it was a mistake. Had I been paying I would have just paid it, but luckily my wife had checked the paperwork and taken it with her. All in all the most unhelpful and inflexible establishment I have ever stayed at.

RUSS FISHER, Owner at Hillcrest Guest House, responded to this review

Thankyou for your review and opinions. Sadly your review contains numerous non-factual comments.

1.All our guests are sent a confirmation by post or email stating the following -

"Your room will be available from 4pm. Please do not arrive any earlier as we cannot guarantee we will be at home to greet you"

You arrived at 3.15pm, 45 minutes early, repeatedly rang the doorbell and telephoned the landline. Early arrival is not an issue if guests arrange this prior to arrival, which you had not done.

2. "it gets cooked in advance"

All our food is prepared fresh every morning and we have a guest comments book full of praise for our breakfast. Sadly neither myself or my wife said anything of the sort and therefore cannot be quoted.

3."First shock was the latest breakfast time of 8:30, which to me is far too early on a weekend, and earlier than anywhere else I've stayed at".

In three years of trading, no other guest has had an issue with our breakfast time. If you had an issue with this , why not ask when booking?

4."It was therefore something of a surprise the following morning to arrive bang on 8:30, then have to wait over 15 minutes for the cooked breakfast to arrive"

Our guests choose a breakfast time and we allow time to enjoy fruit juices, cereals and toast prior to a cooked breakfast. We would have been happy to serve it all at once, the minute you sat down, if only you had asked.

5."When we got up next morning we were told we couldn't have a cooked breakfast as we hadn't ordered anything".

All our other guests staying on the same two days, going to the same event, managed to get a form to us, however late at night, even after we had gone to bed. You could have left a form when you got back, some guests did, you chose not to at all.

6."order breakfast to fit it with the B&B owners"

Our guests choose a breakfast time and it is cooked ready for your chosen time. Guests choice which we work around.

7."Any reasonably helpful people would have said, OK, we’ll cook you something, but no, we had to go without."

You chose not to fill in a form, which usually means you will either not be coming down for breakfast, or simply do not require anything. Despite this, as a gesture you were offered and then enjoyed juice, tea/coffee, cereal and toast.

8."They then claimed this had never happened before which I didn’t believe."

This is a slander which we find offensive.

9."To add insult to injury, instead of an offer of something off the price to make up for the fact we hadn’t had a cooked breakfast, they then attempted to overcharge my wife by £10"

Human error was to blame for the pricing mistake. An honest, genuine mistake.

10. Nobody told us you had to order every day, we assumed that having ordered once that was it."

You assumed incorrectly and failed to ask anything regarding the breakfast forms. If in doubt, always ask, never assume.

“Made to feel like one of the family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2009

Kerry and Russ went out of there way to make our stay most enjoyable and stress free, which can be with a 18 month old!!! Anything we needed was no proplem for them to go out there way to help me.We will be deffently returning to stay at the guest house.
With the town center only a 2min walk encluding the train station the guesthouse is in the best location if you want to get out and about.

“Staggeringly friendly, professionally run, conveniently located.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2009

Russ & Kerry have turned a run-down B&B into a high quality, professional Guest House. Whilst you are sampling the excellent breakfasts, browse their Black Museum photo album of repairs effected.

A short stroll into Uttoxeter and to the Racecourse meant we could safely sample local food and drink without driving. Yet despite proximity to the Town, it was beautifully quiet overnight.

Five classic cars (Triumph Stags) were parked side by side behind Hillcrest for our Stag Owners Club National Weekend at the Racecourse. Each of those five families were equally glowing in praise for Russ and Kerry. Russ even loves classic cars - what better testimonial can you want?! Just book up and enjoy their hospitality!
